College Was To Be My Dowry

College-Girl

My dad told me he was going to pay for my college education as a dowry for my future husband. He said it would be wrong to settle my future husband with debt wracked up for my education when I was going to be a stay at home mom and would never work outside of the home anyway. This is what came to mind when I read the recent viral post Six Reasons Not To Send Your Daughter To College. If I was only ever supposed to be a stay at home mom, you may be wondering, why did my parents bother to send … [Read more...]

Under Her Father’s Authority

father daughter

In many ways, my upbringing and background isn't that weird. Yes, I had twice as many siblings as most people have cousins, but in general my upbringing was very normal---for the evangelical subculture, that is. But when I tell people about my background, the thing that always trips them up is the part about unmarried adult daughters being under their fathers' authority, to the point of requiring complete submission and obedience. This is . . . weird, even for the evangelical world. But in the … [Read more...]

Why I Went to a Secular College

I grew up in family strongly influenced by the Christian Patriarchy and Quiverfull movements. I was homeschooled in order to be "sheltered" and "taught God's truth," and was taught that my role was to be a homemaker and that I was always to remain under male authority (first father, then husband). Given this, my readers have asked why I was sent to a secular college, or even to college at all. Since I've been asked this multiple times, I thought it only fair to write a post on it. So, here … [Read more...]

Jasmine Baucham, CollegePlus, and Leaving Things Out

CollegePlus is a Christian organization that guides students through the process of getting online degrees through a state college in New Jersey. You CLEP, you take online classes, and anything with a lab you take at your local community college - and the whole time you have a CollegePlus (same gender) tutor/guidance counselor helping you. Oh, and a character training program you do on the side, which is a CollegePlus thing and not a requirement of the state college in new Jersey. Vision … [Read more...]

Raised Quiverfull: “Typical” and “Atypical”

Quiverfull4

In what ways was your family a “typical” Christian Patriarchy/Quiverfull family? In what ways was it “atypical”? Joe: We were “typical” insomuch as we attended a conservative church, made decisions only from the Bible, appeared completely normal on the outside, and claimed that our lives would be lived out as was set forth in all patriarchal/Quiverfull beliefs.  We believed doctors were beyond evil and everything could be cured with a clove of garlic or drinking apple cider … [Read more...]

You can’t pray the gay away, even at BJU

I just found a fascinating website. It's called "Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Alumni of Bob Jones University." It's little explanatory subheading is "Because' we're here too." In case you're not from the U.S. or simply not in the know, Bob Jones University is probably the most fundamentalist of all fundamentalist colleges. The school didn't lift its prohibition on interracial dating until 2000. There are strict dress codes and student codes of conduct, classes are all taught from a … [Read more...]

Rick Santorum and colleges as “indoctrination mills”

The more I listen to Rick Santorum, the more it seems like he stepped out of my childhood. It's kind of uncanny, actually. From a news article: Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said Thursday that President Obama wants more young adults to go to college so they can undergo “indoctrination” to a secular world view. On the president’s efforts to boost college attendance, Santorum said, “I understand why Barack Obama wants to send every kid to college, because of their … [Read more...]
