Blogger: Affirmative Consent Will End the Sexual Revolution

college-couple

Earlier today a post from the Patheos family channel, came across my facebook feed. It was titled "Men: The Sexual Revolution Is Over." Curious, I clicked on it and found myself on a blog titled "Church for Men," run by a man named David Murrow. The purpose of the blog appears to be finding ways to combat the feminized nature of American evangelical Christianity. But that was not the topic of this particular post. Not in the least. The topic of this post was far different. Let's have a look, shal … [Read more...]

Why Does Purity Culture Leave out Consent?

sad-young-woman

Samantha Field recently wrote two posts on consent on her blog, Defeating the Dragons. She was seeking to answer a question: Why evangelical purity advocates seem unable to talk about consent except to mock it. I found her insights incredibly insightful. (And this isn't an aberration for Samantha---she's brilliant and has an incredibly moving story and you should all read her blog.)In her first post, Samantha wrote that: They don’t teach consent because teaching consent would undermine one o … [Read more...]

Lourdes Torres, Christian Homeschooling, and Consent

LT1

I recently came upon an excellent example of what I was talking about when I wrote my "The Tale of Two Boxes" post several years ago. Homeschool leader Chris Jeub had this to say in a recent blog post titled "Patriarchy Has Got To Go": In a nutshell, Phillips is being sued by his former nanny, someone he knew for over a decade and was very close to the Phillips family. Her lawyers have graphic details of Phillips forcing himself sexually, and Phillips’ lawyers are denying little of it, claiming … [Read more...]

“That Just Means He Likes You”

This image cropped up in my facebook feed today. The issues it discusses are things I've thought about quite a bit, and I think this little story brings together the threads in a fairly powerful way. First the image, and then some discussion.I was reminded of a viral blog post I ran across a year ago, posted on a mommy blog and provocatively called "You Didn't Thank Me for Punching You in the Face." I am sure every girl can recall, at least once as a child,  coming home and telling their … [Read more...]

The Good Men Project and “Accidental” Rape

confused

When the writers at the Good Men Project began putting up a series of posts addressing rape, they were right to point out that most rape occurs between friends and acquaintances. They were also right to point out that many of society's messages about sex and gender - for example, that men are supposed to keep pushing when a woman originally says "no" - feed into rape culture. These are excellent points, and are things feminists have been saying for quite some time. Unfortunately, though, the G … [Read more...]

So you say you don’t hate gay people, Part IV

Young couple making love

I'm sure you've all heard it before. If we normalize and accepting being gay, next we'll have to accept pedophilia! If we allow gay marriage, we'll have to let people marry turtles, or dogs! I remember hearing these arguments growing up, and they made perfect sense to me. So I've asked myself why they made sense to me then and make no sense to me now, and I have come up with not only an explanation but also a handy way to visualize it.I call it the tale of two boxes.I mentioned yesterday … [Read more...]
