It’s Not Just about Josh Duggar (Some Compiled Readings)

In the aftermath of the revelation that Josh Duggar had an Ashley Madison account, I want to pause to promote some articles making some good points. First and foremost is this absolutely superb blog post by Elizabeth Esther, who points out that this is not just about Josh Duggar:This isn't just about Josh Duggar. It's about an entire system of abuse (see also my article for TIME magazine). This isn't just about one guy's sexual screw-ups. It's about American Christian culture as a WHOLE and … [Read more...]

Why Christian Homeschooling Culture Is Not a Safe Space

Some months ago I stated in a blog post that I was becoming increasingly convinced that Christian homeschooling culture is not a safe space for young women and girls. A reader objected in the comments section, misunderstanding I think both what I meant by "Christian homeschooling culture" and "safe space."  Regardless, reading various figures' responses to the Doug Phillips scandal, and how they discuss Lourdes Torres, Phillips' victim, has made my assessment only more firm. There's this from … [Read more...]

Is the Christian Homeschool World Really Changing?

???????? ? ?????????-????. Microphone at conference.

Things are changing in the Christian homeschooling world. Vision Forum has fallen and ATI is shaken. People are talking, really talking, and the narratives are shifting. Some are still resisting this conversation. They claim that Doug Phillips' fall had nothing to do with his patriarchal ideology. With both Phillips and Gothard, they argue, the problem was with the leader, not the belief system. These claims are dispiriting, because in some sense these leaders are interchangeable. Old ones … [Read more...]

Lourdes Torres, Christian Homeschooling, and Consent

I recently came upon an excellent example of what I was talking about when I wrote my "The Tale of Two Boxes" post several years ago. Homeschool leader Chris Jeub had this to say in a recent blog post titled "Patriarchy Has Got To Go": In a nutshell, Phillips is being sued by his former nanny, someone he knew for over a decade and was very close to the Phillips family. Her lawyers have graphic details of Phillips forcing himself sexually, and Phillips’ lawyers are denying little of it, claiming … [Read more...]

Michael Farris, Patriarchy, and Doug Phillips: An Expose

The article I linked earlier quotes at length from Michael Farris's reaction to Doug Phillips downfall. I thought it was worth going over that section specifically, and placing it within the context of other things I have written about Michael Farris, HSLDA, and Patrick Henry College, both to clarify the issues here and to reveal the serious dishonesty of Farris's statements.I will begin by quoting the section, and will then respond. Homeschool movement and Christian ministryBefore … [Read more...]

Doug Phillips: The Rest of the Story

Lordes Torres

I've known the identity of the woman Phillips had his "affair" with for months now, but I haven't felt comfortable sharing it because she I've felt that she deserves to have her identity protected if that's what she wants. She is now suing Phillips, and has made her identity public. Her name is Lourdes Torres, and she served for years as maid and nanny in the Phillips home. I remember seeing her in various Vision Forum literature, and she was one of the four young women featured in Vision … [Read more...]

Oscar Nominated “Alone But Not Alone”: A Product of the Doug Phillips / Michael Farris Empire

Alone Yet Not Alone, based on a book about two children who were kidnapped by Native Americans during the French and Indian War, was released as a movie in 2013 by Enthuse Entertainment. It showed in select theaters for only one week. This month, to everyone's surprise, it was nominated for an Oscar. I'm not interested in talking about how it got nominated, which seems to be the focus of most articles on its surprise nomination. I'm more interested in something else, and that is the connections … [Read more...]
