Michael Pearl and a Victorian Poem

Victorian

I recently came upon a poem by J. E. Pollock. It was published in 1883 and was called "Woman's Influence." It's very Victorian, and it helps show just how many of Michael and Debi's ideas come straight from that era rather than from the Bible. Here's the poem (and here's the Michael post that most directly relates): WOMAN'S INFLUENCEBy J. E. PollockWHAT bliss that private life attains, How happy is that earthly lot, How blest to man that sacred spot Where woman's genial influence … [Read more...]

The Twisted Evil

twisted

I write a lot here on the blog about Debi Pearl's Created To Be His Help Meet and Michael Pearl's To Train Up A Child. I think it's important to remember that there are people who wholeheartedly believe and follow both books. This isn't some abstract thing. For these individuals and families, this is real life. And the things the Pearls say---things that are, I might add, actually quite widespread in fundamentalist Christian circles far beyond the Pearls themselves---shape the directions of p … [Read more...]

Lesbians, Satan, Hitler: Debi Pearl Responds To Criticism

Debi

I don't know how I missed this short post on the No Greater Joy website a year ago, but I did. I guess I shouldn't be surprised I missed it because I don't read everything posted on the site, and for some reason Why Not To Train A Child only just picked it up today. Anyway, here you go:A Call To StandBy Debi PearlHitler’s propagandists used one of Satan’s choice tools to pull off the biggest crime toward mankind in the history of the world. They used a lie. They taught that if you … [Read more...]

Hana Williams Trial Verdict: Guilty

Hana

Yesterday, Larry and Carri Williams were found guilty of manslaughter in the 2011 death of their daughter, Hana. Larry was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter and Carri was found guilty of both manslaughter and homicide by abuse. Janet Heimlich sums up Hana's story as follows: I first learned about the case when Larry and Carri Williams were arrested in September of 2011. I happened to be in Seattle, about an hour away from the couple’s gated-community suburb of Sedro-Woolley, where I was … [Read more...]

Bottling Up Your Emotions, Children Edition

Have a look at this FAQ from a quiverfull blogger: How do you deal with (1) whining/complaining, (2) arguing with parental directions, (3) poor attitudes (sulking, etc.) in response to chores, food, parental decisions, etc., (4) tantrums. All of the above are a lot easier to avoid, than to deal with. We do not permit whining, complaining, arguing, sulking, tantrums, sibling fighting, rudeness, etc. We avoid them by teaching why such attitudes and behaviors are wrong, and then punishing them … [Read more...]

Hana Williams Abuse and Murder Trial Ongoing

Hana Williams

Hana Williams died two years ago, in May 2011, of hypothermia after her mother banished her from the house as punishment for being "rebellious." Hana was already overly-thin from starvation---her parents withheld food as punishment---and she had often been forced to sleep in the barn, use an outdoor port-a-potty, and shower outside. Hana Williams had been adopted from Ethiopia in 2008 by a conservative Christian homeschooling couple who followed the child training methods of Michael and Debi … [Read more...]

What (Not) To Do If Your Husband Abuses Your Kids

mother and child

I recently ran across this quote from Michael and Debi Pearl's child training manual child abuse manual, To Train Up a Child: Mother, if you think the father is too forceful in his discipline, there is something you can do. While he is away demand, expect, train for and discipline to receive instant and complete obedience from your children. When the father comes home the house will be peaceful and well ordered. The children will always obey their father, giving him no need to discipline … [Read more...]
