The Problem with Big Tent Atheism

big tent

I rarely comment here on the goings on in the atheist community. I'm torn, really. On the one hand, a big part of me wants to go to the conferences everyone talks about, and I do occasionally participate in events with local atheist groups. On the other hand, when I watch things like elevatorgate, or the brouhaha over whether sexual harassment policies are even necessary at conferences, well, it's a bit of a turn off. The thing is, atheism doesn't have a catechism or a statement of faith or a lis … [Read more...]

Worthwhile Reads: Feminism, “Love,” and Kidnapping

worthwhile reads

It Really Wasn't That Long Ago, on Permission to Live: I’ve heard from conservatives that feminism is a silly endeavour today, women have all the rights they could ever want today, that all this anti-women stuff was a long long time ago. (But was it really? Go ask your grandmother!) The thing is, I grew up believing the same stuff. That women had to please men, that athletics would risk a woman’s reproductive health which was pretty much the most important thing about her. In other parts of the … [Read more...]

So you say you don’t hate gay people, Part II

gay marriage2

Yesterday we talked about how no matter how often Christians who opposes gay rights claim they don't hate gay people, their actions still hurt gay people. On some level, then, it doesn't matter whether these Christians actually hate gay people or not. But let's go ahead and explore that question, shall we? Can a person oppose another person's rights without hating that person? In other words, can a person oppose another person's rights for some reason other than hate? After all, Christians … [Read more...]

Christian Patriarchy to Men: You don’t have to grow up!

spoiled

What are the qualities we generally associate with maturity? The ability to see things from others' perspectives? The ability to accept that the world doesn't revolve around you, and that things don't always go the way you want them to, and that you just have to deal with that? The ability to cooperate with others, to communicate and find compromises that everyone can be happy with?Yeah, under Christian Patriarchy, a man doesn't have to do any of that. Because he's the head of the family, … [Read more...]

Marital Rape? Doug Wilson on Dominance and Submission in the Marriage Bed

marriage bed

*Trigger warning for survivors of sexual or domestic violence*The blogosphere I follow has lit up in horror over the last day or so in reaction to a blog post which makes a connection between the prevalence of rape in our society and sex as practiced in the marriage bed today, and, some have argued, responds by endorsing marital rape. This post, which contained a lengthy quotation by prominent conservative evangelical reformed pastor and leader Doug Wilson, was posted by Jared Wilson of The G … [Read more...]

It Finally Bothered Me

For some reason, growing up I was never bothered by the fact that our pastors were always male. And the ushers. And the elders. For some reason, that just seemed, well, normal. And natural. It was just how things were, and I never even thought of them being any other way.I began belief hopping when I realized that I had too much respect for my own ability to think and reason and come to conclusions to simply sublimate all of that and obey my father. I couldn't do it. Suddenly, I couldn't let … [Read more...]
