Hana Williams, Michael Pearl, and To Train Up A Child

This is part of a series in which I am re-posting a number of posts I've written in the past on issues involving parenting and Michael and Debi Pearl. I think these posts may be of interest to new readers, and if you're a reader who has been around with me since the beginning, they may be worth a re-read. This post was originally published here.   And so it continues. Another child has died as a direct result of Michael Pearl's teachings. How many more must die?MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - T … [Read more...]

Lydia Schatz, Michael Pearl, and CNN

This is part of a series in which I am re-posting a number of posts I've written in the past on issues involving parenting and Michael and Debi Pearl. I think these posts may be of interest to new readers, and if you're a reader who has been around with me since the beginning, they may be worth a re-read. This post was originally published here.   CNN has investigated the case of Lydia Schatz, spanked to death by her parents in February 2010. Casting the Pearls back to the Swine

For the next couple of days, I'm going to be re-posting a number of posts I've written in the past on issues involving parenting and Michael and Debi Pearl. I think these posts may be of interest to new readers, and if you're a reader who has been around with me since the beginning, they may be worth a re-read. This post was originally published here.    It is a strange reality that Michael and Debi Pearls’ child training methods were driven into me so firmly as a child that I didn’t even thi … [Read more...]

“A Religious, Authoritarian Culture”

I just came upon an article called "Are you raising your children in a religious, authoritarian culture?" and I thought you all might find it interesting. The author, Janet Heimlich, has written a book called Breaking Their Willon religious child abuse. She has also written an article on Michael Pearl. What I found most interesting about this particular article, though, was that Heimlich gives a list of ten beliefs held by "religious, authoritarian cultures." I thought I'd use this article to go … [Read more...]

Children Spanking Children

Do you ever have those moments where you wonder if you're crazy, and then you receive confirmation that you most definitely are not? I had one of those today while reading an article by Michael Pearl's daughter Shalom, called Training a Child to Come. The article starts out with this: Everyone calls me the “soft-hearted Pearl”, and knowing this to be truth, I knew that I would have to train my children so well that I would not have to rely on spanking. The Pearls have been trying especially har … [Read more...]

Spanking, Fear, and Privileging Obedience

Growing up on Michael Pearl's discipline teachings, James Dobson always seemed mild in comparison. My impression was always that Pearl was about absolute immediate obedience while Dobson tempered his advice to spank with an emphasis on understanding child psychology. I just came upon a quote from one of Dobson's books that is making me rethink that - and has emphasized to me once more that the whole point of spanking a child is to make him or her afraid of disobeying."The day I learned the … [Read more...]

“For your own good”: The insidiousness of spanking

"I'm doing this for your own good.""Believe it or not, this hurts me more than it hurts you.""Someday you'll thank me for this."It strikes me that Michael Pearl and others like him - even James Dobson - create a situation in which parents feel that if they love their children, they must hit them, whether they want to or not. For Pearl, Dobson, and others like them, it's the parents who don't hit their children who are unloving.Michael Pearl says that if you do not hit your … [Read more...]
