Is That the Best You Can Do, WORLD?

world-magazine-screenshot-1

Preeminent evangelical WORLD magazine has now weighed in on the lawsuit against Phillips, and I have to say, their focus is sadly misplaced. Beyond the messiness for the families and the local church involved, the case also has implications for the broader church, and it’s likely to draw attention from those outside the church as it gains traction. Without a careful understanding of Christian teaching, a tragic situation could bring derision on Christianity more broadly. It’s certainly hap … [Read more...]

Doug Phillips: The Rest of the Story

Lordes Torres

I've known the identity of the woman Phillips had his "affair" with for months now, but I haven't felt comfortable sharing it because she I've felt that she deserves to have her identity protected if that's what she wants. She is now suing Phillips, and has made her identity public. Her name is Lourdes Torres, and she served for years as maid and nanny in the Phillips home. I remember seeing her in various Vision Forum literature, and she was one of the four young women featured in Vision … [Read more...]

Is Vision Forum Gone?

staff2012

There has been no public announcement, but the Vision Forum Ministries site now includes only the resignation statements and the Vision Forum Inc. site is no longer selling anything, or even listing any products. This suggests to me that Vision Forum has collapsed entirely, and that the corporate wing is disappearing in addition to the ministry wing.If this complete collapse is the case, as it appears, this is an extremely positive change. Vision Forum has been probably THE pillar of the … [Read more...]

Vision Forum Ministries (but not Inc.) Shutters Its Doors

Vision Forum Ministries

That's right, they're closing operations. They referred to Doug Phillips "inappropriate relationship" as "serious sins," which says to me that there's more going on than we have seen yet. I'm wanting more clarity, but I think Vision Forum Ministries closing down means no more Hazardous Journeys and no more San Antonio film festival. But you know what it doesn't mean? What it doesn't mean is no more Vision Forum Inc. That part is still up and running, as you can see here.In fact, the blog is … [Read more...]

Oh Yeah, That’s Totally Repentance

Phillips

As I noted before, Doug Phillips very clearly only stated in his letter of repentance that he was resigning from Vision Forum Ministries, the nonprofit branch of the enterprise, and did not state that he was resigning from Vision Forum Inc., the commercial branch of the enterprise. As regular readers will know, Doug Phillips, a prominent leader in the Christian homeschooling movement who preached a return to biblical patriarchy and had gained a large following, is in the midst of a bit of a … [Read more...]

Doug Phillips’ Get Out of Jail Free Card

get out of jail free

There is little that bothers me more than the excuse-making that comes out in full force every time a Christian leader is found engaging in some form of moral wrongdoing. You see, so long as that Christian leader says "I'm sorry" properly, they're apparently immune from any form of criticism, whether now or in the future. In the wake of Doug Phillips' resignation, I have seen literally dozens of comments across the blogosphere in which individuals have praised Phillips and denounced bloggers who … [Read more...]

How Doug Phillips Wreaked Havoc on My Family

Adolescent Girl with Head in Hands

My parents homeschooled me K-12, and during those years they fell under the influence of several Christian leaders who spread toxic dogma and find their following within the Christian homeschool movement. My parents never followed Gothard, but they did follow both Michael Pearl and Doug Phillips. I've talked a lot about how their devotion to Michael Pearl taught them to think that if they raised me "right" they could ensure that I stayed on the straight and narrow, copying my parents in my … [Read more...]
