The Christian Homeschool Movement and Nostalgia

Frye's Geography

When I was eight or ten, my mom was really interested in finding a particular geography book to use in homeschooling us. Frequently when we would go to a historical home or a museum, she would see it on a shelf and say "There! That's the book I want!" It was published in 1902, you see. Frye's Geography. She'd heard it promoted somewhere, at a conference or in a homeschool magazine. She eventually found it used somewhere and was thrilled. She began using it with us, and while the images were … [Read more...]

“Women and Children First”: An age-old anti-feminist myth

Titanic

I've written a lot about Vision Forum, and about their fetishization of the Titanic, and this week I came upon something of a bombshell. You see, that whole "women and children first" thing is a myth - a fabrication - originally created in order to combat the fight for women's suffrage. When Vision Forum touts the "chivalry" of the men on the Titanic, it not only perpetuates a lie but also uses this lie to do the same thing the lie was created in 1912 to do - fight against women's rights. Let's … [Read more...]

Vision Forum views food as a HUGE THEOLOGICAL ISSUE

Vision Forum has just put out a Petition for Prayer: This week Vision Forum Ministries will endeavor to do something we think timely and significant. We recognize that the mission before us is both dangerous and risky. Once more we walk into the breach of controversy, this time by addressing a very difficult subject fraught with inherent challenges, not the least of which are the potential of error from confusion, extremism, trendism, indifference, apathy, and worse—theological heresy. Wow, t … [Read more...]

Worthwhile Reads: Vision Forum hosts conference on food

Vision Forum Hosts Conference on Food Thus, Vision Forum has managed to weave patriarchy, fear of so-called "statism", and distrust of environmentalism into a conference on food. Their distrust of environmentalism does not surprise me, given Doug Philips' hostility toward environmentalists and Earth Day. Still, it disappoints me because environmentalism, sustainability, and food are closely connected issues. A conference on food issues could have been a perfect opportunity to discuss the … [Read more...]

Heritage Defense: An HSLDA for the Family

I just today found out about something called Heritage Defense. Do you remember what I wrote before about the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA)? Basically, HSLDA is a form of legal insurance - you pay an annual premium and in return have any legal fees covered - for homeschool families. While HSLDA only defends families who wind up in legal trouble over homeschooling, this new organization offers families legal insurance for a whole range of parental rights issues.Vision Forum is … [Read more...]

Jasmine Baucham, CollegePlus, and Leaving Things Out

CollegePlus is a Christian organization that guides students through the process of getting online degrees through a state college in New Jersey. You CLEP, you take online classes, and anything with a lab you take at your local community college - and the whole time you have a CollegePlus (same gender) tutor/guidance counselor helping you. Oh, and a character training program you do on the side, which is a CollegePlus thing and not a requirement of the state college in new Jersey.Vision … [Read more...]

Raised Quiverfull: Coming under the Influence

above rubies

How did your parents first come under the influence of Christian Patriarchy/Quiverfull teachings? What leaders did they follow and what publications did they receive? Joe: When I was seven, my parents divorced.  This was 1987, the sort of peak to the “ministry” of the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), run by the Christian guru, Bill Gothard (Billy Boy G.).  At the time, Mama attended a weekly marriage counseling seminar called Rebuilders, a program put out by IBLP.  The pastor who ran … [Read more...]
