How Else Was ‘He Gonna Get His Money?’: Relatives Outraged After Homeowner Kills Burglary Suspect

A 54 year old Miami woman found a seventeen year old named Trevon Johnson breaking into her home.

Unfortunately for him, she was armed and shot the intruder. He was later pronounced dead.  Although this is very sad for the family of Johnson, this seems like a classic example of what a homeowner did right — when she realized that she and her home were being intruded, she defended herself.  In fact, the essence of self-governance is taking care of one’s family and property without relying on someone coming in to save the day.  As Thomas Jefferson said, Americans are self-governing people who are “free and mean to remain so.”

Grieving family members should be cut some slack as they undoubtedly need time to process the news of his death.  However, their response does indicate a serious lack of personal responsibility.  The Blaze reports that they blamed the homeowner:

“I don’t care if she have her gun license or any of that. That is way beyond the law … way beyond,” Johnson’s cousin Nautika Harris told WFOR. “He was not supposed to die like this. He had a future ahead of him. Trevon had goals … he was a funny guy, very big on education, loved learning.”

“You have to look at it from every child’s point of view that was raised in the hood,” Harris continued. “You have to understand … how he gonna get his money to have clothes to go to school? You have to look at it from his point of view.”

To be free, Americans have to take personal responsibility for our own lives.  That means getting a job when you need money for clothes.  Sadly for Johnson, that also means getting a gun and learning to use it when you feel you might be under attack.
