10 colleges where free speech isn’t on the syllabus February 23, 2017

American universities are a shell of what they used to be. No longer are they the bastions of free thought and expression, where ideas are debated and challenged. Today, campuses are overrun by the New Fascists who shut down free thought and demand conformity to progressive ideas or else.

It’s worse at some colleges than it is at others. So, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) made a top-ten list of the worst which you’ll find below in this slideshow. Since they began keeping track, some colleges responded and instituted more relaxed speech codes. However, 92% of American universities are still restricting students’ First Amendment rights and sequestering anyone who wants to express themselves into small “free speech zones.”

Here are the 10 colleges where free speech isn’t on the syllabus (in no particular order) as compiled by FIRE:

1. Northern Michigan University

Until FIRE called them out on it, Northern Michigan University prohibited students from discussing suicidal thoughts or self-destructive actions with each other. Doing so could get them into trouble. Though now the school has backed off that policy, FIRE says they still have some explaining to do:

NMU is currently under investigation by the Departments of Justice and Education for allegations that it threatened to disenroll a student for discussing mental illness with a friend. The school allegedly forced the student to sign a behavioral contract promising not to do so again. Is that student now free from her contract? Is every student who received a letter about discussing self-harm now free to speak out? Will NMU ever acknowledge and apologize to the countless students it hurt in the past, many of whom have spoken up to FIRE and online? Until we get answers, NMU remains on our list of worst schools for free speech.
