Parents in Texas are serious about football, and one school is super blessed to have a talented coach willing to put in the hours, heart, and energy into coaching a bunch of hugh school kids.  Last year, Coach Todd Peterman of DeSoto High School even led his team to the state championship…. and won!

The players love him, and his track record speaks for itself.  So why did the school board meet for three hours to discuss his termination?  Well, one NFL player – who happened to go to DeSoto High School – has his suspicions:

An article in the Dallas News showed that Orr is not alone in his beliefs:

The team’s unofficial chaplain, Abe Cooper, told the board and the audience he hoped race wasn’t a factor regarding Peterman’s status at DeSoto.

“We pray that that’s not the case and he will be renewed,” Cooper said.

Peterman is white. In 2015-16, 80.4 percent of DeSoto’s 2,440 students identified as African-American, according to a report from the Texas Education Agency.

Thankfully, his players are rallying behind him.  Almost forty showed up to show support at the Board meeting.  Will that be enough to save the coach’s job?  If not, I really hate it for the kids at that school.  They joined the team to learn football, but they’d be learning a much harsher lesson about the world.  Some people really can’t see past the color of someone’s skin.

God bless this coach, this team and the examples they set.  And may God have mercy on those who who turn this into a matter of race.  Such behavior is evil…serving only to divide.
