Chastened

Emily Stimpson changed my mind. She’s simply right. We are members of one another (Romans 12:5) and it is entirely fitting for the Church as a whole to do penance for the sins of the clergy. This does not mean there isn’t something tacky about those most responsible issuing the call. But, from the standpoint of revelation, it is simply the case that we are to be like Paul and “rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in our flesh complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church”. Truth remains truth, even when spoken by men who are in no position to speak it credibly. And the sacrifice is all the sweeter, if you are not among those who are responsible for the evil.
