The Inimitable and Fun Louder Fenn dares to disagree with ME about the Matrix!
… and I pretty much agree with him. When I say the Matrix recapitulates the Paschal Mystery, I certainly don’t mean to say that the morality of the film is Christian (any more than I would say the morality of the book of Joshua, with its mass slaughter of Caananite men, women, children and even cattle, is particularly Christian). But Joshua remains an image of Christ (a theme found in both Scripture and tradition). We have to distinguish between image and reality here. Clearly, the film is drawing on the Paschal mystery for its structure. That’s my point. My point is not that you can learn a lot about Christian morality from the way Neo blows away innocent people in his cool trenchcoat. And, as I think I mentioned to somebody yesterday, I won’t go to the mat denying it’s got strong gnostic themes. But I do note that, in the jumbled goulashe of religious imagery, that’s not all there is to the film. Anyway, enough of all that! Maybe we should move on to the Fellowship of the Ring. What do you think?
