As If We Didn’t Have Enough Problems…
with clueless bishops who don’t grasp that it’s not normal for priests to give public speeches about the glories of Man Boy Love, now we have lay apologists insisting that the only Real Catholic[TM] is a geocentric Catholic. Yes, Robert Sungenis actually thinks that Galileo was wrong, that Einstein’s theory of relativity (which he claims to debunk) is part of a plot by Modern Science to discredit Aristotle (as a prelude to debunking belief in the Real Presence) and that the only valid reading of Genesis 1-3 is a flat-footedly literalistic one. Clever fundamentalist Catholic that he is, he has ingenious ways of explaining away the fact that the Catechism (CCC 390) says, “The account of the fall in Genesis 3 uses FIGURATIVE language”.
I once contributed an essay to a book Bob edited (Not By Scripture Alone). But I would like to make clear, publicly and out loud, that I have nothing to do with these kooky views on science. If you hear that “lay Catholic apologists” believe such nuttery, think “Bob Sungenis”, not “all of them”.
On the bright side, this does appeal to my sense of the absurd: IN A TIME OF CRISIS, WHEN THE WORLD WAS RIVEN BY WAR AND THE CHURCH REELED FROM SCANDAL, ONE MAN STOOD TALL FOR THE THINGS THAT REALLY MATTER! BOB SUNGENIS! FOE OF RELATIVITY! CHAMPION OF ETHER!
