I think it’s a moot problem since we are never getting off this planet, and nobody is ever coming here. We might–might–make radio contact, but I think even this is unlikely. If there’s life elsewhere we need to know a) does it possess a rational soul? b) is it fallen? c) does redemption look for it like it looks for us? d) has redemption been withheld? e) will redemption be forever withheld? Only a “yes” to all those questions poses a problem for Catholic faith. As Lewis says in his fun little essay “Religion and Rocketry”, a Christian whose faith never encounters any stronger objection than this set of hypothetical turnip ghosts is sitting pretty.
