I thought this was a typical “We never met a heretic we didn’t like” NY Times puff piece on Elaine Pagels

But a reader disagrees:

I thought the piece made her look like she hasn’t got a clue – period. I can respect someone who says: God’s a bastard – or, God doesn’t exist. They have a right to their opinion, though I don’t agree with it.

The idea of people going to the cross or the arena because they felt good about the ‘spirit’ of Jesus – that’s milksop sentimentalism and completely out of touch with the terrible risks and real horrors of martyrdom.

Maybe she thinks the martyrs risked losing tenure.

I didn’t feel the article was entirely respectful of her, btw.
