I’m not alone

On Tuesday’s “O’Reilly Factor,” a Catholic professor surmised that the Vatican wanted O’Brien to clean up his own “mess.”

Note that saying, “I think this is what Rome is trying to do.” is neither an endorsement nor a condemnation of the policy. It is merely (as I have been trying to say for months) stating clearly what I think Rome is up to. I state it because it is better to know what is really going on than to have a false idea of what is going on.

I still don’t know beyond the word of unnamed “sources” that Rome’s reasoning also involves some hare-brained notion of “not being pushed around by civil and lay authorities”. Could be. But it could also be that Rome thinks it more important for some American bishops to face the full consequences of their actions from civil authorities. I dunno. If it were up to me, I’d take Neumayr’s advice about that bit of canon law and get this Clintonian weasel out of the See of Phoenix. But it’s not up to me. So I just calls ‘em as I sees ‘em.
