    Excellent analysis. I hope it’s true that lots of Christians were praying for Bin Laden, but that’s not what I heard from most of those who spoke out. They were rejoicing over his death, assuming that he was in hell and seemingly quite happy about that outcome. Many reacted the exact same way when Saddam Hussein was killed and when Teddy Kennedy died.

      I know it was predicted that people would rejoice that way when Ted Kennedy died, but I never saw any of it. I think it was mostly manufactured outrage at the few wingnuts on that one.

    I didn’t see rejoicing at Ted Kennedy’s death. Some scolds were disappointed at features of his funeral Mass and burial. But I cannot recall any “rejoicing.”.

    Additionally, many wise Catholics in the varied Catholic tribes were cautious and circumspect with bin Laden’s death. I saw some “rejoicing” but remained pleased at the temperament of Catholic public commentary. American Catholic thought has far advanced since the days of Spellman.
