than Communism? Everything it touches, it turns to crap. Everything.

We may be living in such a system. The late Hamish Frazier pointed out, well before the collapse of the Soviet Union, that the saving grace of Communism is that it is so oppresive sooner or later even Communists get tired of it. Western liberalism, he continued, would be harder to get rid of because it enslaves us by means of our own vices. I also don’t think the current system in China is really Communist; it has been accurately described as “Leninism without the Marxism” – sort of a Leninist corporate capitalism.
Which form of communism?
I actually find the form practiced in Catholic Monasteries to be extremely conservative, preservationist, and life affirming.
That’s Distributism, not Communism.
If it is Distributism, then why have a Father Abbot?
If you mean that the monasteries are deliberately kept small for the sake of sustainability, solidarity, and subsidiarity, I’d agree with you however….but they’re still communal living and communists.
Communism is Nazism-one-size-fits-all.
Monasticism is not Communism. It is more like a monarchy.
Non “monarchy” sed “monachy.”
I thought communism meant “state ownership of the means of production.” What am I missing here? Cuz last I heard, the state in China no longer owns large amounts of the means of production.
My point: attributing the tyranny of Chinese rulers to “communism” is all but meaningless. However if you really want the question answered about the most worthless and evil system, I’d have to go with the system that ran the Mongol Empire: their invasions killed something on the order of 40 million without benefit of modern technology or bureaucracy, let alone modern ideology. I can’t find the exact figure right now, but I recall reading somewhere that that death toll constituted the largest percentage of world population of any war in history.
The Chinese “communists” are a bunch of pussies compared to Genghis Khan.
Not really. In Cuba, it actually has done many great things like increasing education levels and decreasing poverty rates. It’s not so much “Communism” as much as some forms of Communism, like it’s not “Christianity” that is evil but forms of Christianity.
I agree. “Communism” in the US is used as a scarecrow to scare away anyone proposing anything else than “run away capitalism”. And maybe it is that “run away capitalism” based on Ayn Rand ideas that is so relentlessly worthless and evil. I am not saying here that every form of capitalism is bad, just that every form of communism is not necessarily that bad. This is where there is a need for both factions of the US Catholic church to define their terms, so it will become clearer what is being actually proposed, and/or opposed, by each, and, like it has been my experience when I participated in a prayer group at my neighborhood Anglican church (after asking our bishop if it was ok to do so!) I discovered that Catholic and Anglicans actually had many things in common and that working together on what we have in common as Christians while “agreeing to disagree” might lead to some positive results.
II normally use the definition “living communeally”, but given that,, the State in China does still own the means of production thanks to the 51% law.
