…to Simcha Fisher’s point.  As I said in her combox, “Speaking as somebody who has never ever ever done the things you describe,  Simcha, I will be going to confession soon to confess lying in this comment. :) ”

    Ms. Fisher is right. Don’t go around shooting your mouth off. Most people are just as smart as you are, even if they don’t look it. And for God’s sake, don’t ever tell anybody in your parish church that you are a fan of Pope Benedict, or a Republican.

    I don’t think the problem is with the substance of her offer or the idea behind it. It was the smug prideful manner; her offer wasn’t made in charity but in self justification. It is something we all do. If she reached out, met with them and discussed their situation in a true effort to help them toward a better approach to life, she would have learned what the true state of affairs was and could have offered real help. It is a lot harder to do than sending someone 50 dollars.

    I thought she wrote a nice piece about Jerks for Jesus. It occurs to me that part of the Crucifixion was the knowledge that His sacrifice would be explained to the world by so many jerks on such a frequent basis (myself included). I thought it was also a good window into the temptation of thinking that one is the hinge of history — anyone’s history, whether it’s an unmarried couple with child or the West.
