Just returnd from the Opening Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (whew!) in DC. THousands upon thousands of people,. mostly under the age of 30. Priests, bishops, sisters, brothers, seminarians, postulants, felt like it was Rome without pickpockets and good gelato. Groups driving 20 hours straight from western states. JUST AWESOME, all united for all life.

I’d like to emphasise this, speaking as a British person. Prolife people are so few here, and the established media-political complex so dominant, that the loudness of the debate over in the States is often the only thing keeping the abortion issue in the news. It’s the only thing making people actually think about abortion as an issue on which it’s possible to have an opinion, rather than just accepting it as the unchangeable status quo in our oligarchical semi-democracy. Europeans often criticise Americans for being noisy and argumentative, but we all owe you a great deal of thanks for being noisy and argumentative enough to wake us up – at least some of us, and from time to time.
