And now a word from the Lunatic community

“17,640 like this”

The cult surrounding Maria Divine Mercy are none too happy about this pope.  Much freakoutery about the Warning being upon us by Good Friday (good! I like false prophecies to  have short expiration dates).

Particularly telling is this utterly bourgeois comment from one of The Faithful over at Facebook:

Don’t you know that his so-called “humble life”  and “love for the Poor” are part of Satan’s plan?  Before Satan does something with the great desire to succeed, he has to prepare very well first until his time  arrives…. We know that humility is a very important characteristic of a good servant of God that’s why the False Prophet (Pope Francis) needed to appear humble externally before he sits at the Vatican..  If you notice, the media always and always tell us how humble he lived.. They keep on repeating it .. They also showed some picture of him riding only a bus back then.. He is very desperate to convince us that he really is humble.. haha!! He is only making it obvious for us who already knows the truth..  and  take note that, the people in his town in Argentina already consider him a Saint.. Jesus said in one of his messages that the False prophet will be treated like a Living Saint! and those who oppose him we will be called heretic!  (So, we will appear as if we are the bad ones!)

Love for the poor is satanic.  Mkay. The awesome anti-charism of discernment so common among Faithful Conservative Catholics[TM] marches on!

  • Dylan

Where have we heard this kind of thing before? Oh, yeah, they said it about Jesus: “He drives out demons by the power of Satan.” Good sign for Pope Francesco! Viva il Papa!

  • http://a-star-of-hope.blogspot.com JoAnna

No sir (or ma’am), I don’t think you’re a heretic, because most true heresy seems to be grounded in logic (however convoluted or incorrect).

Irrational and illogical mouth-frothing rants point more toward mental illness, not heresy.

  • SpasticHedgehog

Did so many people go this crazy when Benedict was elected? I can’t tell if it died out or never happened.

    • Mark Shea

The craziness was with progressives. That’s still there with this guy (see the skeptical mind thread) but this time Reactionaries are also flipping out because “not thinking the EF the most important thing on planet earth” is equal to “Hostility to the Extraordinary Form” in their minds. When your whole world revolves around your private obsession, all things are measured in light of it. Somewhere there is a fanatical stamp collector who is asking, “Where does Francis stand on the 1939 commemmorative World’s Fair Stamp?”

      • http://janalynmarie.blogspot.com Beadgirl

I’m still waiting for Pope Francis to opine on the issues that truly matter:

        Star Wars or Star Trek?
        Kirk or Picard?
        DS9 or B5?

        • Mark Shea

Star Wars, Kirk, and B5, naturally. Duh.

          • Rosemarie

            +J.M.J+

Of course. Everyone knows that. :-)

          • http://janalynmarie.blogspot.com Beadgirl

I am ecumenical with regard to the first two questions, but B5 is non-negotiable. So well done, Mark, I will continue to grace your blog with my presence.

          • Jmac

Kirk vs. Picard is a prudential judgement, but B5′s supremacy is doctrine.

  • SpasticHedgehog

Also, somewhat hilariously, my office filters won’t let me through to her website as it is classified as spam. So even our IT system thinks this is nuts.

  • MtMama

I have a Cranky Trad theory: They are upset because they were so sure the Prophecy of St. Malachy was true. They were gleefully awaiting Peter II to step out on the balcony and begin the drama, complete with cleansing the earth of the N.O. mass, renunciation of Vatican II and the thinning of Mark Shea’s beard (may it never). At least, the Trads I know seem to suffer from this disappointment.

    • Stu

      Yeah, both of them.

  • MtMama

Can people just not wrap their minds around the evidence that someone in power might be genuinely concerned for the poor? Because that’s not how they would act in his place? Has our Ayn Rand influenced society completely lost it?

  • http://www.2catholicmen.blogspot.com Ben @ 2CM

Who needs Papal Infallibly when that web site is available for us?
    Incredible! literally…not-credible.

  • Subsistent

Actually, methinks there is a kernel of truth in the admittedly crazy facebook comment. It’s this: humility is a deeply interior virtue, quite difficult, therefore, for us earthly humans to tell apart from mere semblances of it. What’s favorably impressed me about Pope Francis is such heartening choices by him as keeping for his first appearance his wooden pectoral cross, doing without a mozzetta, taking a bus with the cardinals, taking care himself of his luggage and of his lodging-bill, etc. These betoken for me a beautiful directness, straightforwardness, genuineness, as well as a healthy self-reliance.

  • Chris

Only Francis could drive the “Hysterical Left” and “Angry Right” wings of Catholicism into an apoplectic fit at one and the same time. This bodes well, for a Church that lives in a both/and universe, not either/or.

    • Arnobius of Sicca

Blessed John Paul II received such treatment. Before his Motu Proprio on the 1962 Latin Mass, I saw many radical traditionalists heaping abuse on Benedict XVI.

Personally I suspect the issue is some people confuse their preferences with Church doctrine and if the Church doesn’t meet their preferences, it means it isn’t meeting Church doctrine.

I suspect a good deal of those people involved in this MDM nonsense probably are deceived in this way.

  • NoahLuck

Good grief. I seem to recall that this type of argument was already addressed by an unusually authoritative figure in the history of the church: “Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided against itself will not stand. If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? …”

  • Matthew Remlinger

Here’s what the screwball pretending to see visions has said most recently about our new Pope Francis. May God bless our Pope and have mercy on these charlatans’ souls.

  • NFPMomma

Well Mark, one out of three only proves your humanity. Star Wars, Picard (for his sheer non-physical badassery), and DS9. :)

    • Mark Shea

Clearly, the election of Francis has inaugurated the last times, when men lose their reason and think as the beasts do.

    • http://janalynmarie.blogspot.com Beadgirl

I’m sorry, NFPMomma, you are not the right kind of Catholic if you choose DS9 over B5. Please see yourself out.

  • http://commonsensecatholicism.blogspot.com Kevin Tierney

I think from now on we need more catechesis from St. John of the Cross, who said ignore every private revlation, even if it be good. For every one good bit of private revelation there are hundreds of buffoons like these people.

A world where I did not have to hear about Medjugoogoo and the trueseriouslythistimeitsreal interpretation of the Third Secret and everything in between would be a very happy world for me.

  • Brian

Wow MDM was dead on! According to her, the new Pope was suppose to teach one world religion, and diminish the distinctiveness of Jesus. Judging from this quote from Francis’ first homily, it’s almost like he was cribbing from her website:
“Whoever does not pray to God, prays to the devil. When one does not profess Jesus Christ, one professes the worldliness of the devil.”
Right on MDM! Total one world religion rag there!

  • Marthe Lépine

It seems to me that some of this is not really new. Are not some Protestant groups claiming something about the Catholic Pope being what I think is “the whore of Babylon” or some such woman from the Book of Revelation? Maybe I am not correct, or that has changed over time – I have been too busy to read up on Revelation..

    • Allan

Oh, that’s been going on since Martin Luther. I think it’s toned down over the last decade or two, compared to the mid-1900′s, as conservative Protestants realize we have more in common with them than most liberal Protestant denominations do, and as we both face the attacks of secular/atheist types. Working together on pro-life and pro-family causes has helped as well. There’s still the odd Jack Chick or Dave Hunt type out there, but it doesn’t seem as bad as it used to be. Mind you, it still annoys me that evangelicals send most of their “missionaries” to Catholic countries, to convert people who are already Christians into Protestants, rather than to non-Christian countries where they could be making new Christians. I think if that could change, we could really consider ourselves to be working for the same side, rather than feel like we’re fighting each other at the same time as we’re fighting secularism. I guess another example of the “kingdom divided against itself cannot stand” – how far has Christianity fallen in the world since we started fighting amongst ourselves in the 1500′s?

  • Andy, Bad Person

We know that humility is a very important characteristic of a good servant of God that’s why the False Prophet (Pope Francis) needed to appear humble externally before he sits at the Vatican.

Yup, that’s the Devil I’ve always heard of. Humble. Or something.

  • Allan

“He will head up the new one-world religion and will reign over pagan religions. He will embrace atheism by waivering the stigma he will say is attached in the pursuit of so-called human rights. All sins, in the Eyes of God, will be deemed acceptable by this new inclusive-Church.”

Apparently this “Jesus” she is receiving messages from isn’t good with English, or she figures the messages aren’t important enough to do a good job of recording them, because that is one garbled paragraph. I know the internet isn’t exactly the place to go if you’re looking for good grammar and spelling, but if I was a prophet sharing the actual words of Jesus with the world, I think I’d make pretty darn sure I was accurately quoting him. Seems like that would be kind of important, but apparently not to “Maria Divine Mercy”.

Also, it’s pretty ridiculous to say a church would deem all sins acceptable. Even atheists just replace the sins they want to commit with ones they want to impose on everyone else – “don’t drive a gas guzzler or say anything that might bother a homosexual”.

    • Mark Shea

Apparently this “Jesus” she is receiving messages from isn’t good with English

Well, it’s not his first language.

      • http://janalynmarie.blogspot.com Beadgirl

Ha! You know, I wonder if any of these fraudulent-message types would ever go through the trouble of learning a little Aramaic. It’d add a little cachet to their schemes.

  • Kirt Higdon

OK, I’ll bite. What are DS9 and B5? I tried googling but came up with a number of definitions and no apparent reason why one would be considered an alternative to the other.

    • Mark Shea

Deep Space 9 and Babylon 5, the former being the Star Trek ripoff of the latter.

    • http://janalynmarie.blogspot.com Beadgirl

Go watch B5 — it’s an incredible show. The creator planned out a deep, intelligent five year story, and so the series avoided some of the problems that plagued X-Files and Lost. He’s an atheist, but respectful of religion, and it shows in the ways he depicted it in the show. The awesome Brother Theo and his fellow monks are recurring characters in season three. The character arcs of two characters, G’Kar and Londo, are profound meditations on sin and redemption and faith and the consequences of sin. Seriously, go watch it.

  • frenchcookingmama

The real test of quackery is when even Spirit Daily ignores a “prophetic” message. They love Francis because of his humility and charity, and that will start to renew the Church.

It’s only a matter of time (I hope) before someone chases this kook out of her foxhole and exposes her for the fraud she always was.

  • frenchcookingmama

The real test of quackery is when even Spirit Daily ignores a “prophetic” message. They love Francis. Not one mention of the “malachy prophecies” or this “anitpope” nonsense.

It’s only a matter of time (I hope) before someone chases this kook out of her foxhole and exposes her for the fraud she always was.

  • Tamara Horsburgh

I like how everyone had opinions on star wars vs star trek but not a single soul commented on the 1939 world’s fair stamp! Poor isolated stamp geeks of the world!

  • Matt

Good Friday passed, no “Warning” yet…

I can’t wait to find out why it didn’t happen!

  • Christine

    To Maria Divine Mercy:
Try to save your soul before it is too late. The devil has infiltrated your psyche. Can’t you see it? You allow the fallen angels to put thoughts into your head! They are wicked and sneaky beyond belief. Stop all this nonsense, go to confession and repent. You lead many people down the wrong path.
For the sake of your family, your children, Rebuke Satan and become clean! Do it now!
I will pray for you and all the poor people who you mislead.
