Who Better to Celebrate the Vernal Equinox Than Tom Lehrer?

  • Michaelus

“…but its not against any religion,
to want to dispose of a pigeon”

Brings back memories of when my Dad would get up to pull the phonograph arm off the record before “The Vatican Rag” started to play!

    • Susan

“Get in line in that processional
      Step into the small confessional
There the guy that’s got religion’ll
Tell you if your sin’s original”
      ……
      “Gettin’ ecstatican
      Sort of dramatican
      Doing the Vatican Rag!”

I’ve always loved Tom Lehrer ever since I heard “The Old Dope Peddler” and the periodic table song.

  • LUKE1732

A vote for “Fight Fiercely, Harvard”.

  • Ye Olde Statistician

I stopped liking him when he said that the Challenger astronauts deserved to die.

    • Mark Shea

      ?! I missed that.

      • Ye Olde Statistician

He says he couldn’t do anything with the Israelis and the Palestinians “because I’m against everybody and I can’t take a side”. Nor can the man who found so many snappy couplets and delightful tunes in impending nuclear doom see any toe-tapping inspiration in September 11, the invasion of Iraq, or the thing he seems most keen to talk about the Columbia space shuttle explosion.

“They are calling it a disaster instead of a screw-up, which is all it was. They’re calling these people heroes. The Columbia isn’t a disaster. The disaster is that they’re continuing this stupid program.

“One of the things I’m proudest of is, on my record That Was the Year that Was in 1965, I made a joke about spending $20 billion sending some clown to the moon.

“I was against the manned space program then and I’m even more against it now, that whole waste of money. And so, when seven people blow up or become confetti, then they’ve asked for it. They’re volunteers, for one thing.”
        – Tom Lehrer, http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/02/28/1046407753895.html

        • Mark Shea

Man. That’s cold. I had no idea.

        • S. Quinn

Holy smoke. Well, it is par for the course. Many other entertainers, especially actors, may do fabulous jobs entertaining us while holding reprehensible views.

        • Ted Seeber

The sad thing is that NASA basically came to the same conclusion- and due to that, remote control semi-autonomous robots will explore the universe while we stay home in our lazy boys. The Columbia Disaster killed manned space flight beyond LEO for the next generation.

Get the slinkys out as they are now in season.

There’s a certain chemistry about Leherer. My favorite is “the elements”, There’s antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium, and hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium”…

On a more serious note, I doubt there will be anyone attempting to prevent the starvation death of this Iraqi war veteran. 1. ritually unclean source. 2. Sometimes in the story of the good samaritan, people side with the jericho road robbers.

No offers of aid, no vigils, no discussion. Neither of starving the VA for funds nor of counting the cost of the war in souls. War IS hell indeed. Many that went ballistic over Terri Schiavo supported the war, but I doubt I will need more than one hand to count the prominent Catholics who try to intervene to stop his death. I’m not sure if Phil Donahue is still a Catholic. Yet if he is not what does it say about those who are?

  • S. Quinn

Awful story. I suppose the difference is that he is choosing by himself to commit suicide, while in Schiavo’s case, her husband wanted to kill her. Not sure “vigils” would help. It’s not clear that “aid” would stop this man.
I for one am praying for him and will do so throughout Holy Week.
For the record, I am truly appalled at the way we treat our veterans.

My favorite used to be “I Got It From Agnes” and “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park”, but these days it is “The Elements Song”, and especially this fabulous party piece: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6YD_gAgowk
