America, Then and Now

America, Then and Now September 8, 2014

Then:

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.” – Dwight D. Eisenhower, New Age Hippie Peacenik

Now:

“Every dollar spent on health benefits for retirees is a dollar we can’t spend training and equipping men and women to deal with the Islamic State, Putin and other threats.” – Brave donor of other men’s blood Charles Lane in the WaPo the other day.  He has, needless to say, never served and you can bet that he is not interested in being gassed for being a pesky old person using up precious war resources on stupid “health” issues.  Lane understands that, whether by ordering their death on the battlefield or in a euthanasia clinic, you save your own worthless skin by making other people die for their country.  Or at least for Charles Lane.

Oh, and do remember that a lot of those health benefits Mr. Lane resents are for vets who got chewed up in wars chickenhawks like him sent them to fight, and then abandoned to the tender mercies of a Ruling Class that cuts their benefits while voting themselves raises.

By the way, this seems as good a place as any to honor my friend Erin Raymond’s family, who have actually made the sacrifices so that parasitic cowards like Mr. Lane can live their fat, dumb and happy lives. God love you guys and thank you!

That’s from his speech the Chance for Peace. Excised from the quote above:

“The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities.
It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population.
It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals.
It is some 50 miles of concrete highway.
We pay for a single fighter with a half million bushels of wheat.
We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.”

This is not only a conservative criticism, but a Catholic one:

“Spending enormous sums to produce ever new types of weapons impedes efforts to aid needy populations; it thwarts the development of peoples. Over-armament multiplies reasons for conflict and increases the danger of escalation.” — CotCC 2315

      • David Naas

By all means, do not allow the current GOP leadership (as anti-conservative as it gets) to know about this. I can see them launching a probe into these Un-American Catholic Agents of a Foreign Power.

Jointly, of course, with their Democrat partners. You guys are going to have to take the partisan blinders off at some point in your young lives.

At age 66, I take your remark as a compliment.
And, yes, there is no substantial difference between any of the Players today.

did anyone read “pro-life” romney’s op-ed on the need for a mighty military??

from a man who never served, nor did any of his sons. funny how these are people most eager to go to war.

but if you don’t vote for him you will go to hell says stupid GOP catholicism.

    • Marthe Lépine

I did read that; very interesting. Can you imagine if he had been elected president in your last elections?

      • Joseph

Sure… there would be no difference.

    • Marthe Lépine

PS Maybe it is only like a stopped clock, but Obama seems to be correct once in a while, but not in the way his opponents would like…

Former VP Cheney meeting with House GOP as Iraq strategy debated

How is Cheney not in jail right now? Instead he’s called by the GOP to lecture them on what to do in Iraq. Basically, he’s the expert on the mess that he made.

The GOP are completely wrong on just about everything.
