Prayer Request

Prayer Request June 13, 2016

A reader writes:

I’m asking for prayers for an elderly friend who has been railroaded into a poor assisted living facility against her will by a POA (relative, not a child) who took advantage of a lapse in judgement on the lady’s part. She has lost control of her sizeable funds and is literally locked into the facility. The POA said she was supposedly there for a 2-wk evaluation (though how a psychologist is able to evaluate what is a medical condition remains a mystery), but it is clear that the POA intends keeping her there forever as she is now there for 3 wks. Said POA plans to sell her home of 20 yrs and has threatened to take her forcibly out of state against her will if she continues to talk to me. I have tried to get an attorney for her to find out what happened to her money and to get her into another facility or home with a live-in caregiver, so far no luck. Adult protective services is supposedly investigating, but again nothing is happening. Since this started, I have learned that something like 20% of financial elder abuse is caused by relatives who abused the trust of their elderly family members. This woman needs helps. The conditions in the communal bathroom (holes in the wall, filthy curtains, etc), locked into the facility unable to leave even to go to lunch or shopping (I have been threatened with arrest by the POA for even talking to her), having to stay in a place where many of the residents have severe mental conditions, having her wishes completely ignored, threatened with the loss of her home, etc. have depressed this poor woman tremendously. Normally, a cheerful lady, she is crying daily. Even condemned prisoners have more rights than this lady.

If there are any readers out there who can advise me or know of an attorney in southern CA who can help, they can contact me. This lady has considerable assets (she is a millionaire) that she cannot access thanks to the POA; she can well afford the best facilities to live in (if she needs it). But she is literally imprisoned in, to use her words, “a dump”. And sad to say, the POA is a Catholic.

Father, hear our prayer that justice and mercy be done this woman and that she be delivered and find a home and peace. St. Joseph and Mother Mary, pray for her. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
