Matthew Loftus Gets It

Matthew Loftus Gets It October 20, 2016

Donald Trump is the apotheosis of the sexual revolution’s worst male impulses. He has spent his entire life creating the culture that encourages abortions. He has profited off of the exploitation of women and spoken openly of his own proclivity for sexual assault—both of which undermine any argument pro-life conservatives might ever make for a culture of life. By forcing prominent conservatives to downplay or dismiss these, Trump actively tarnishes their credibility and turns the moral high ground they might otherwise stand on into quicksand.

This goes back to my point that, in its quixotic fantasy of overturning Roe and stopping abortion by cutting off supply, the prolife movement has recklessly committed itself to the folly of supporting a politics that enthusiastically increases demand. And with Trump, they have now completely dynamited their power of moral suasion, which was always they only real power they have ever wielded. Utter and complete folly.

Loftus’ only mistake is that the damage is already done. But he’s dead right that Trump is far more toxic and deadly to the pro-life movement than a thousand Hillarys. There is, of course, still hope in the power of the Holy Spirit to raise the prolife movement from the dead. But make no mistake that the Trumpkinized prolife movement (which is the bulk of the prolife movement) has committed suicide. And the more they threaten hellfire against those who tried to warn them, the more they alienate natural Christian allies. Madness.

Remarkable to see this on the Federalist site.
