…Donald Trump’s America is my America too.”

A gracious, thoughtful, and patriotic piece from a man willing to turn the other cheek and work for the common good. More of this. A lot more.

Out task as Christians remains the same whoever is in power:

Strive for peace with all men, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fail to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” spring up and cause trouble, and by it the many become defiled” (Heb 12:14–15).

If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all. ¶ Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” ¶ No, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Ro 12:18–21).

Prudence is seeing clearly what is so and acting justly, with temperance and fortitude in light of reality. Reality is: Trump won and we are called to respond with faith, hope, and charity to the new normal. Doesn’t mean acquiescing to evil acts (indeed, should they come, it will be our duty as Christian citizens to resist them). But so far, he has been gracious and magnanimous in victory and it is incumbent on us to respond in kind and outdo him in magnanimity in loss. The common good is more important:

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem!
“May they prosper who love you!
Peace be within your walls,
and security within your towers!”
For my brethren and companions’ sake
I will say, “Peace be within you!”
For the sake of the house of the LORD our God,
I will seek your good. (Ps 122:6–9).
