Sez he:

I seriously think your desires are not for the good of the country. You wish to see failure of Donald Trump. That would be the failure of all of us.

Then you are wrong. And you are projecting. It was Limbaugh who hoped for Obama to fail, good of the country be damned. What I want is a President who seeks the common good and promotes a culture of life. If he does that, I will of course support him. But what he has done so far is seduce Christians away from defending either the unborn or the gospel and persuaded them to defend him. Last week, they frittered their time away telling us not to believe our own two eyes when he mocked a disabled reporter. This week we are to overlook massive ethics problems and the snowballing investigation of his ties to Russia. That, not the unborn or the Faith, is what conservative Christian Trump supporters are busying themselves with. And why? For the promises he made in his Inaugural. What are those promises?

Fr. Robert Barron points out that the four great idols of the heart are money, pleasure, power and honor, all symbolized by the Golden Calf.

Listen to Trump’s speech:

Together, we will make America strong again. We will make America wealthy again. We will make America proud again. We will make America safe again. And yes, together we will make America great again. Thank you. God bless you. And God bless America. Thank you.

Strength, Wealth, Pride. Those are the ultimate goods he is proposing. Sound familiar? He’s promising the Golden Calf, nothing more and nothing else. Nothing about making America good and sure as hell nothing about making America care about the dignity of the human person from conception to natural death. And Christian Trump supporters fall down and adore this phony gospel.

My real concern about Trump, I say before God, is that he is a seducer of the brethren and that Christian Trump supporters will spend four years dancing to his tune, not he to yours.
