I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this deck or not. I decided to grab it anyways as it looks very unique – and it is. I’m glad I did as I’ve fallen in love with this deck. The Zombie Tarot: An Oracle of the Undead is perfect for those who are looking for a deck for October, vintage horror fans, zombie enthusiasts or feel like everyone around them is brainless zombies. The artwork is a vintage collage style 50’s and 60’s kitsch. The cards are campy, fun and have a dark sense of humor.
The cards have a matte finish and the card stock is fairly sturdy, being a bit better than most mass produced decks. The deck comes in a nice sturdy box, which isn’t normally the case for mass produced tarot decks. I found myself enjoying how clever this set is; from the cards themselves, to the box opening up to be designed as an ammo case, to the booklet itself. The booklet is full colored and styled to have that retro vibe to it. The end of the booklet has quirky ads such as Zombigone, trained Zombies for sale, survival lessons, grenades and much more. The guide is entertaining with imaginative spreads such as The Beginner, The Broken Heart, The Gravestone, The Eyeball and The Severed Head. The four suits are divided into the four traditional suits with the renaming of the Pentacles suit as Hazards (bio-hazard signs).
The cards retain their traditional meanings as well with a humorous zombie twist. For example for the Chariot the text reads, “The Chariot signifies movement. You know where you’re headed and you know precisely how many zombies you’ll need to mow down to get there. Your hard work is paying off… but don’t lose sight of the road that brought you here. If you’re considering a large purchase, such as a new car, perform due diligence and make sure it has plenty of extra legroom.”
