Mildred Payne’s Secret Pocket Oracle and the expansion pack Mildred’s Letter by Patrick Valenza is a really creative oracle deck. Valenza is better known for his Deviant Moon Tarot and Trionfi Della Luna Tarot. Valenza has created an interesting story around these oracle decks that feature the fictional Mildred Payne, a child in the 1920’s who was committed to an asylum due to her witch-like behavior. Valenza writes, “In 2017, asylum workers discovered an old hospital gown hidden in a wall. ‘Mildred’ was written on the inside collar. Upon further examination of the garment, the workers were surprised to find a tiny pocket sewn into the underside, containing a crude yet mysterious handmade oracle.”
The oracle deck is tiny, but feel like they’re the appropriate size for this oracle deck. Mildred Payne’s Secret Pocket Oracle contains 52 cards. Each card has a bit of a sketch on the back and are in themselves a puzzle for a larger image. The deck is pretty straightforward and simple, which is really nice. The cards mean about what you would imagine them to mean, which makes getting acquainted with the cards a quick and easy process. The cards in Mildred Payne’s Secret Pocket Oracle are as follow; Fetus, Time, Hag, Girl, Boy, Devil, Tooth, Blood, Ear, Eye, Heart, Hand, Skull, Moon, Sun, Storm, Fire, Water, Dagger, Boot, Key, Cat, Flower, Mirror, Stick, Poppet, Wall, House, Moth, Wheel, Tree, Ladder, Door, Factory, Rat, Snake, Pentagram, Bell, Broom, Chalice, Fish, Cauldron, Orbuculum, Octopus, Poison, Umbrella, Candle, Trumpet, Crow, Coin, Spider, and Ankh.
Mildred’s Letter is a 15 card “expansion pack” of Mildred Payne’s Secret Pocket Oracle. The story behind these cards is that they were found inside one of Mildred’s old dolls, along with a letter from Mildred. Like the Pocket Oracle, these cards feature different pieces of images on the back to be made into a puzzle, which turns out to be a spirit board. This booster pack includes cards 53 to 67 which are; Iceberg, Bee, Pipe, Axe, Frog, Saturn, Ribbon, Stump, Foot, Pitchfork, Lighthouse, Arrow, Dove, Antidote, and Star.
