If I were to make a Christian hip-hop/electronica album…

Then my artist name would be εξουθενημενος and my album would be בן בלי שם (both of these words roughly translate to “The Nobody” because God refines my art by making people ignore it). I used to have a rock band seven years ago called the Junior Varsity Superheroes. I learned how to navigate the local rock scene and we did pretty well. Hip-hop is very much a second language to me; I learned how to rap because I was a youth pastor. I have little interest in mainstream hip-hop. I’m more interested in pursuing what it was originally: a genre geared to social critique (KRS-1, Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, etc). The 16 tracks I have shared below may appeal to the micro-constituency of people who are trying to recover from the phenomenon known as evangelical Christianity.

About Morgan Guyton

I’m the director of the NOLA Wesley Foundation, which is the United Methodist campus ministry at Tulane and Loyola University in New Orleans, LA.

  • Pierre Keys

Write some lyrics to each of these tracks as your next few blogs.

    • Morgan Guyton

Oh they’ve all got lyrics. I can paste them into this post. I just didn’t do it yet.

Brother, what marvelous art! I so admire the way you miniter. I hope we can connect again. Tu hermana Evie. I would love a cd!

    • Morgan Guyton

Great to hear from you Evie! Qué haces ahora? Te echo de menos tanto.

  • Just Stop

this may be hard to digest, but stop.Just stop. one of the worst complaints I hear of Christian rap is that it sounds “corny”, and stuff like this does nothing to erase that complaint. Just because you CAN create the most basic of rhymes following the most basic rhyme schemes, doesn’t mean that you should.

    • Morgan Guyton

I don’t think you really listened to any of the tracks. I consider it an honor to be dissed by a hipster. If you have constructive criticism to offer, I’d be grateful for it, but I have no use for ejaculations of ridicule.

      • Just Stop

See that’s part of the problem. In your opinion I didn’t listen, so you get pompous and dismiss it as non constructive. in fact I listened far too long to about 6 of the tracks, and gave you the constructive criticism. as rap, hip hop or whatever moniker you wish to use, this is crap. These would make wonderful written poems, but to place them in the rap category is counter productive.
You put them out on the internet and asked for opinions, then when you get an opinion that doesn’t mirror your own, you get defensive. Apparently you don’t want opinions, you want praise.

        • Morgan Guyton

To call something crap is not constructive criticism. You haven’t told me anything about my music. And you’re contradicting yourself. First you were hating on the rhymes and then you were saying they’d be wonderful poems without the music. People who are at peace with God and themselves don’t talk the way you’re talking.

        • Morgan Guyton

Is your vocabulary really so limited that this is the most you can tell me? Your critique is a reflection on your capabilities as a critic.

        • Morgan Guyton

The fact that you’re using a fake mailinator email address doesn’t do much for your credibility. Really? You made up a temporary email address called “juststop” to tell me off?
