The Pursuit of Enough: Remembering the Thankful

I can flip the switch from Resting Weekend Micha to Anxious Snap-Mouth Micha in about, ummm, three minutes of staring at my computer, remembering all that exists in there that I still have to do. The lovely thing about my Lenten practice of Sabbath beginning at sundown on Saturday night and ending sundown on Sunday night, is that I still have time on Sunday to sort out my week on the computer. I have time to catch up on some blogs, to read a couple of articles. Chris and I go through our … [Read more...]

The Pursuit of Enough: Keeping Sabbath

“We rest in order to honor God and his creation, which suggests that not to rest dishonors both.” -Judith Shulevitz, The Sabbath World   The thing about Sabbath is that there are still always dishes to do and the kids are still themselves. There are diapers to change and stories to read. And that’s my job all week long, right? Can there really be a day when I rest from the demands of raising children? There is paper all over the counter: bills unpaid and that reminder about the … [Read more...]

The Pursuit of Enough: Vol 1 Can you possibly organize your ENFP life?

I had a breakdown freak-out sobfest last week. I feel like if you’re gonna cry, go hard or go home. So the sobfest included my slamming my fists into the couch, standing up, screaming, “Don’t laugh at me!” at my husband and then stomping to my office with the intent of slamming the door until I realized my kids were sleeping so I just flipped  off the light switch with as much fierce fervor as I could muster. (I don’t recommend taking your anger on light switches. It’s not … [Read more...]

I know I am the beloved.

“Home is the center of my being where I can hear the voice that says, ‘you are my beloved in whom I am well pleased.’ Jesus made it clear that the same voice that he heard in the Jordan River and on Mount Tabor can be heard by me. He makes it clear that there is a home with the Father. But if I decide to keep control, if I go out into the world, I will keep running around asking everything, ‘do you really love me, do you really love me?’ I give all the power to the voices of the world. … [Read more...]

Light Your Candles Quietly: Keeping Advent with Mary, Vol. 1

"Light your candles quietly, such candles as you possess, wherever you are" -Alfred Delp

Vol. 1 - An invitation to enter Advent attentive and aware   August and I sit outside the ice cream shop on Clement Street, licking chocolate from plastic spoons and watching the bustle of a city Sunday afternoon pass by. We’re having an afternoon together while Brooks sleeps and Chris builds some bookshelves. I’m still, sitting on a park bench beside my kid, quiet and satisfied. When it’s time for his haircut he’s happy with the old Peter Pan cartoon playing in the tiny … [Read more...]

Thankful Tuesday: Preschool Bravery and Gut-Laughing

Yesterday was August’s first day at his new preschool. He was scared. And it is an afternoon program so he spent the morning mentally and emotionally terrified and I spent the morning trying to do everything in my power to take his mind off the severe anxiety. (I think he inherited his worried nature from his mother. No comment.) When I left he was in tears. Then I went to drop off paperwork in the preschool’s office and I ended up crying in the arms of the sweet administrator (who I’m … [Read more...]

A post that ends with grace.

Send out your light and our truth, that they may lead me, and bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling. Psalm 43:3 The blogging life is the weirdest. Most days, I post something and hope that my mood and my hormones and my common sense all collide with my inner artist and that something beautiful is waiting on the screen for all the readers who will come and listen. Other times, I realize I let my Crazy out and now everyone knows. Of course, I’ve warned you that she (my Crazy) … [Read more...]

Why I’m afraid to tell you where we’re going on vacation

Florence, Italy at sunset (via romanticplaces.tumblr.com)

On September 19, Chris and I are going to Italy. Without our kids. And we’re going for ten days. There, I said it. I’ve been so afraid to tell you and there are a lot of reasons: One, I’m afraid you’ll judge me for spending money on a trip like this. (Or even having the money to go on a trip like this.) If your upbringing was anything like my husband’s, you’ll think I’m ridiculous. Why in the world would I judge you for spending money to go to one of the most beautiful places … [Read more...]

Thankful Tuesday: Pre-Move Moving Weekend

IMG_20120901_163534

We did it. The movers showed up Friday morning and took all our possessions away to some secret lair in California, where our things will sit until November. Our selves, our cat and our suitcases all showed up Friday afternoon at the temporary house (what I’ve taken to calling our “fake house”). And after one long Friday night (the cat and the oldest boy had trouble sleeping), everyone seemed to adjust pretty quickly. Besides a jaw that won’t stop clenching and some … [Read more...]

{This Sacred Everyday} Andrea Palpant Dilley

Andrea Palpant Dilley has led the writer's group I've been part of at my church for the past year. I have adored the community she has created in this group: genuine kindness, encouragement for each person at whatever stage of their writing, and a sweet willingness to celebrate one another. Andrea is one of those people who looks you in the eye and says your name at the beginning of the most important sentences. I'm grateful for her perspective, her grace and her mind. If you haven't yet read … [Read more...]
