Thankful Tuesday: It’s almost Christmas!

A fuzzy little pic of the boys and me on the trolley. It was bedtime...

Children singing “Away in a Manger” and sharing the stage with one of the best double bass players in San Francisco this past Sunday. I love my church. I’m thankful that we got to come back to a community here in SF that welcomes and loves us and confounds me with its teaching. I’m thankful for Christ Church in Austin and that I can simultaneously ache for its post-service bagel time while loving the post-service donut time at City Church. Two communities this past year and … [Read more...]

Thankful Tuesday: Adjustment and the Hope of Normal

Yes, these are the empty (Empty!) boxes in my hallway...

Today is election day in the US and I know a good blogger would have something really meaningful to say about that. But today, I’m going to have to send you elsewhere for your meaningful election posts, because I’m obsessed with the fact that we’re in our new apartment! I’m still operating without Internet so my sole communication with the outside world has been radio and Twitter on my phone. (My phone is pretty lame so my tweets are barely-tweets.) Those things don’t really matter … [Read more...]

One Last Moving Day Post

sweethomesweet

We’re moving today. Are you so sick of me saying that? Me too. So, in honor of my mind and tasks being elsewhere, I’m giving you a hodgepodge of things I’m thinking about today:   The best things about eight weeks in two separate temporary homes: August finally getting to experience his dream come true: Stairs in his house! (Too bad that only lasted 4 weeks). Cable! Cable in both temporary homes! Or, as my kid calls it: Live TV Being able to live in the cool … [Read more...]

Thankful Tuesday: Newness and Hope

After a day spent texting and checking on East coast friends and family, what a sweet thing to wake up and find all are safe. Also, the house we own (and rent out) in Philadelphia did not flood! (With its flooded past, that is a miracle, friends.) My sister-in-law Michelle's facebook posts. Love that girl. (PS She's going to have a baby any day and we can't wait for a little girl in our world!) The gift of living near my husband's little sister, Charlotte, who is going to college an hour … [Read more...]

My big, scary moving fears (or, when God gives the good gifts)

170453387_d68735d1ea_z

I cried when we found out we were moving to San Francisco. I cried because we’d never be able to get August into a preschool in this crammed city packed with kids on waiting lists since their days in-utero. I cried because I had finally been able to afford a babysitter a few days a week in Austin, and I’d finally been finding the writing time I’d long-hoped of having. I cried because if I had to pay a gazillion dollars for August’s preschool, I’d never be able to afford a … [Read more...]

Thankful Tuesday: Dumpling Kings, Trader Joes, Little Boy Bow Ties, etc.

My little Dumpling King

How do I count the ways this week? Old friends and the goodness of being “home” at our church in San Francisco A cozy, clean, comfortable temporary home My first trip back to the glory that is Trader Joe's. (I’ve missed you in my life TJ’s!) Texts and invitations and play dates and no time to sit around feeling sorry for ourselves We found an apartment we love in a good location with (wait for it) a garage and a shared backyard! (Still waiting to see if that one goes … [Read more...]

One Week, Forever, Right Now: A Reflection

The first thing August wanted to do when we got to San Francisco.

It’s been one week since we touched ground and saw our boys. One week since we came home from Italy and here we are turning in an application for the second apartment we looked at, which had everything my faithful mother had prayed we’d find, spending Sunday afternoon at that apartment’s neighborhood library (which happens to have an amazing play ground out front), watching August bond with a little boy named Reese and letting them play together for over an hour because, seriously, … [Read more...]

How to say goodbye

IMG_20121003_210517_0

Fifteen months ago, when Chris was offered his new job and we made the decision to move to Austin, my first call was to Jamie, my roommate in college and my maid of honor. She’s lived in Austin for eight years. We both cried on the phone. Never had we thought it would be possible for our kids to be real friends. Her son was born six weeks before August. When August was five weeks old and her little guy was eleven weeks, Jamie hopped on a plane by herself with the babe in tow and flew … [Read more...]

True all the way through (A Deeper Church post)

Deeper-Church-Logo

I'm very excited to officially announce that I'm joining the ranks at A Deeper Church, a new channel of the site A Deeper Story. I've been following A Deeper Story as long as it's been in existence, admiring the writers and loving how the blog has sought to both ask hard questions of the Church and give the Church good grace. So it's an honor that I have the chance to join my voice in with so many other writers I admire. I'll post over there once a month and I'll be sure to link to it over … [Read more...]

Thankful Tuesday: Pre-Move Moving Weekend

IMG_20120901_163534

We did it. The movers showed up Friday morning and took all our possessions away to some secret lair in California, where our things will sit until November. Our selves, our cat and our suitcases all showed up Friday afternoon at the temporary house (what I’ve taken to calling our “fake house”). And after one long Friday night (the cat and the oldest boy had trouble sleeping), everyone seemed to adjust pretty quickly. Besides a jaw that won’t stop clenching and some … [Read more...]
