Friday Links

Muslimah Media Watch

Open wide! Here’s a hefty dose of links for 10.19.07:

  • Scary. White supremacists demonstrate against niqabis’ rights to vote.

  • A great post on exactly why all this political uproar about niqab in Canada is racist.

  • Unique Muslimah talks about the sly marginalization of Muslim women on Yahoo!

  • Australia kicks around the ridiculous idea of banning hejab in airports. Is Australia still a democracy?

  • Tunisia’s courts rule a ban on hejab unconstitutional. Enshallah this will prevent future harassment of hejabis in Tunisia.

  • Iranian girls demonstrate against poverty—and there’s lots of adorable pictures!
  • A review of AlSanea’s Girls of Riyadh: Just another neo-Orientalist book?

  • Science isn’t always objective: James Watson links sunlight to libido, and suggests that Muslim women who cover the majority of their skin are frigid. I think he’s just mad because no Muslim woman in her right mind would want to have sex with him.

  • Nirali magazine discusses the fact that people still just don’t get the idea of purdah (or hejab).

  • Barikallah! The United Kingdom gets its first Muslim woman in Parliament.

As-Salaamu ‘alaikum,I wonder if you’re aware that Watson is right now best known for claiming that “Africans”, i.e. blacks, are less intelligent than “Europeans”, and backs this up with claims that people who have had to deal with Black employees would know about it?http://www.blogistan.co.uk/blog/mt.php/2007/10/18/watsons_visit_stirs_up_raceiq

Salams ladies, an article from the Guardian this morning: http://lifeandhealth.guardian.co.uk/family/story/0,,2196486,00.html I thought it may interest you.

Waleykum salam!Thank you for the link, Silent Rant. That was a really touching story; this illustrates how the hejab MUST be a choice–wearing hejab without the personal commitment to do so causes a lot of pain, frustration, and even hate towards those who force the hejab and even towards Islam. Hejab must be a choice.

Yes from someone who has been through a similar experience (but from the other spectrum) I found her article to be somewhat pointless. I mean if she was writing to a Muslim female audience who is supressed then fine I can see – but this article was in on of the UK’s most widely-read broadsheets. It just reinforces this barbaric image of the Muslim community that somehow hijab is forced – whereas a lot of women choose to wear it.I just found it very badly written so I wrote a short blog on it on my site, so feel free to check that out if you like… I believe it is important to hear all sides of the story and to be objective about these things. Also plan on writing “my experience of hijab” for your blog shortly as you asked a couple of months back. Will give you that shortly inshallah x
