God, I heard on the radio today that Canadian parliament is passing a bill requiring Muslim women wearing full face veils have to reveal themselves to identify who they are in order to be able to vote.http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/10/26/veils-legislation.htmlThis is upsetting because how large of a problem could Muslim woman double voting be? Only about 40% of people in Canada vote, why make it harder for the people who do? Double voting is the only reason I can image they would want this bill. That and you can vote By proxy, never even having to show any ID!Although they did state that women can show their faces in behind an enclosure to a female polling official. “During the recent byelections in Quebec, the government made it clear that we disagreed with the decision by Elections Canada to allow people to vote while concealing their face.”Funny, it always goes back to Quebec. For years no one has seemed to have a problem with Muslim woman voting with their faces covered. Why now? Also, this is the Tories attempting to introduce the bill, our Republican-like party, is that a surprise?Thankfully today’s post if full of good news!
The story about the Carleton professor being a niqabi for three weeks was fascinating. I’m curious what the administration and faculty thought of it.
