    That tanning bed link is interesting. When I was in Iran last (about 3 years ago), I got the impression that it was more fashionable to be fair-skinned. Too much sun could “make you black” and therefore, ugly and undesireable for marriage.

    Zahra–you’re right. In Iran (like in most non-”Western” countries) fairer skin is considered prettier. The tanning trend is really more related to upper-class women, a tan is a status symbol.

    Re: lack of Muslim menWhy not non-Muslim men then? The Qur’an does not say that a Muslim woman cannot marry a man of the book (Christians and Jews). That Muslim women cannot marry outside of the religion is not strict Islamic law but just an interpretation.
