Fatima Mernissi, in Scheherazade Goes West, after a trip to a New York department store where she could not find a skirt in her “non-standard size,” wrote, “I realized for the first time that maybe ‘size 6’ is more a violent restriction imposed on women than is the Muslim veil”

I loved what Karen Armstrong said in her book 'ISLAM- A short history":

"Veiling can also be seen as a tacit critique of some of the less positive aspects of modernity. It defies the strange Western compulsion to 'reveal all' in sexual matters. In the West, people often flaunt their tanned, well- honed bodies as a sign of privilege; they try to counteract the signs of ageing and hold onto this life.

The shrouded Islamic body delares that it is orientated to *transcendence,* and the uniformity of dress abolishes class difference and stresses the importance of community over Western individualsim."

Great article! Good to see how you pointed all the Orientalist concepts at play here. Orientalism is still alive and well here within the Occident and it's not about to go away anytime soon. The only difference between past and present stereotypes is that they have a little more knowledge about Muslims and Islam but not enough to fully understand our way of life.
