I think these women have revolutionized they way we make and share music. And this is even FURTHER beyond what the internet has done for music. These women have proven, for whatever reason people want to listen to their music (and I quite like "Pinnocchio by the way), that you don't have to have your image (this is especially empowering for women in general who are often judged on their physical appearance as much as their music) and you don't have to play live.

And thank you for pointing out that the media is focusing on their political/cultural/social importance more than on their music. It's a good point, but to that I say, hey, it's show business. If people want to listen, who cares what it sounds like and how they came to listen to it. There's so much crap out there that any help an artist can get, they should take (but think about where it's going to take them first).

Thanks again! I'm inspired by AccoLade and I hope to hear more from them. But if not, I'm thankful for what they've given us.

Great insight. Being in a flat world is really affecting us. This band is affected. I also remotely get to hear about it and even read your well-crafted insight.
Being a Saudi I must say that there are Saudi ladies that put *most-if-not-all* men into shame, Reem Tuwairqi, Hayat Sindy, just to name a few. Unfortunately their influence is limited because they are scientists and are busy with what they are doing, plus the local media wouldn't appreciate what they are doing anyway - which is world level. If there is a way to have female role-models that are in occupations that do not rely on publicity influence local people, it would be great to all.

@ Keystone: thanks for letting us know about Chicks Behind Walls! I guess it was wrong of us to assume that there weren't any other girl bands in Saudi Arabia, considering there are 60+ bands in the country (according to the article I quoted in my post).

Too bad the NYT article didn't manage to find out about CBW--they could have made use of the crazy publicity The Accolade go.

They are not the first (or last) Saudi rock band, and they are not the first Saudi all-girl band either. Chicks Behind Walls are Saudi's first all-girl rock band.

A fellow Saudi band who is also struggling is Sandstoned; three of the band members, including the vocalist, are Saudi nationals. Regardless of gender, all rock artists in Saudi Arabia struggle to find live venues; the laws in the Kingdom are gender-blind when it comes to such matters of propriety.
