I remember reading this article a while back and thought it was really interesting. I have a few thoughts regarding women's rights and roles in Saudi society. This article shows how many people are trying to shift attitudes towards women working outside the home, and doubtless with other issues too. However, I hear from many people (Muslim, Saudi and non-Saudi) that the women there are happy 'just as they are', and that the limitations on their freedom as highlighted in the HRW report, are something women accept because they are 'part of Islam'.

Is it at all fair for some Saudis to generalise and say, actually Saudi women are perfectly happy with the status quo? I think that it does somewhat of a disservice to women because it totally dismisses the abject discrimination that women in Saudi face, as is often highlighted in the articles you discuss/link to. This was being discussed a while ago on my blog so thought it was a good time to bring it up.
