When I was in Jordan, I'd walk past some lingerie stores and say "what the HELL?!?" They actually had some really kinky stuff, which surprised me. And that was just from what was in the display windows!

Oh no, I was going to write about this on blog, but Yusra has beat me to it. Though I must say that this article wins hands down, so I have to stop writing now! haha!

As a big fan of silly and sexy lingerie, I believe that there is more to lingerie than its role in perpetuating the fetishisation and hypersexualisation of female bodies. Yes, I am biased in that way because of my love for frivolous undergarments. This is because I believe that lingerie belongs to a more private domain for women - women's bodies in lingerie are not on display for public consumption. Women and men can be equally active participants in the bedroom, and after all, sexual fantasies between consensual adults is always healthy and obviously encouraged for married couples.

I'll bet my life savings that there are plenty of Christian Republican women who wear crotchless panties underneath their long skirts ;)
I don't actually have a problem with this sort of bifurcation, as long as the women are getting something out of it; I've lived in Vancouver for six years and I don't see that sexual explicitness has made women's lives easier - as distinguished from sexual honesty and reciprocity, which is rare in cultures anywhere. I do like being able to wear shorts whenever I feel like it.
When I was living in Bangladesh we bought all our clothes and lingerie from male retail clerks (which incidentally disproves the Western conservative stereotype that there is something inherently feminine about retail). Nothing with a remote control, though :)

Great post!!

When I first saw this book, I admit, I was like, "Ehhhh...like we're not already sexualized enough?" And even though some of that still lingers when I think of how we're representing ourselves as Muslim women, the fact that it's a book about Arab women by Arab women makes me much less reluctant to accept its message. :)
