You pointed the right issue I think Nissa ... As a french living in France ( and muslim convert, but not veiled ), I can see how anything involving Islam or muslim immigration is used to make a non-pertinent debate, thus covering other much more important sensitive subjects ( incredible laws being passed, etc ... ) that should be much more discussed. But it's been years now that french politics favors most of the time, if not all the time, the "islamic threat" to cover the real info. Is this obsession due to the fact that France has the largest muslim minority ( proportinnaly ) in europe ? or because of our strange interpretation of "laicité" ( secularism ), which looks more like a religion, a state religion of its own, rather than a principle used to govern peacefully adn respectfully people from different backgrounds ? Sad times we live in, if presidents don't find anything more crucial to speak about than pieces of fabric ...

This is beyond ridiculous, for the sake of some 300 women in a country of 3.7 million Muslims- surely there are more pressing matters like unemployment, disadvantage and education that should be looked into to help Muslim women?!
I am sick of the obsession with what we wear- from all sides! Our choice means nothing if it doesn't conform to the dominant culture and as long as we are invisible- no on wants to see a woman who looks Muslim in Europe, we just remind them their precious little Western civilisation is under threat from our wombs and our men.

The burqa clad woman is the ultimate symbol of the submissive baby machine- how about someone actually go talk to these women? Oh wait, Muslim women have no independent thought and its all false consciousness...
No one cares what Muslim women think or want, we are the ultimate ideological battleground in the 'clash of civilisations'.
At the risk of sounding all doom and gloom....it will just get worse.

> Maybe I should ask you, your daughters, to go the “WESTERNIZED NATIONS where women are treated as sex objects, kids as young as 13 have sex with multiple partners, and celebrities who show their private parts are being idolized?”

You can ask, but they already do, and they seem quite happy with it.

"Go back to.. where you already live!" sounds a bit weak, although it's certainly non-controversial.

Elisabeth Badinter, you poor soul.
Why are you asking these women to take off their burqa/hijab?
Why not ask Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, or Paris Hilton to please limit the amount of flesh that they bear to the public?

Maybe I should ask you, your daughters, to go the "WESTERNIZED NATIONS where women are treated as sex objects, kids as young as 13 have sex with multiple partners, and celebrities who show their private parts are being idolized?"

If you don't like seeing women wear the burqa, maybe you should just close your eyes.
You don't understand that these women CHOSE to wear the veil. They were not forced.
End of Story.
So zip up your mouth before you offend any more Muslims with your downright biased, stereotypical comments that have no real basis at all.
~~~Civilization cannot be equated with a uniform dress code.
