It reminds me of Frantz Fanon's discussion of the eroticization of the veil of Middle Eastern woman by the European male, and the desire to 'unveil' her. Perhaps now it's evolved into a general obsession to 'unveil' Muslim women with the grand hope of finding the truly exotic, and the use of the word evokes that inner desire within many Westerners?

Love this post!

"Claiming this right to go under the veil violates the decision that the wearer has made about which parts of her body are up for public viewing. We wouldn’t try to write an in-depth portrayal of someone entitled “behind the shirt” or “beneath the pants.” Let’s try to stay away from symbolic undressing altogether, okay?

So funny and so true.

Salaam Alaikum,

Umm Zak So I'm not the only one who rocks hair reptiles under my hijab?

Really good points about the figurative undressing. It's the putting of minorities in the constant postion of having to explain, justify and defend themselves. They don't just question us, but our very right to exist.

Beautifully written. Thank you. I am a christian, however I find it highly offensive when people tread on another person's religious or cultural beliefs as if they need to be "freed." It is ignorant and shows a degree of disdain for the very person they are think they are helping. Much respect to you for writing this and hopefully more people all over the globe will take this example to understand each other rather than change one another.

Peace

I don't know about you, but behind my veil, there is superhuman beauty. The snakes are not poisonous, though.
