  • In San Francisco, a federal appeals court granted a new hearing to a Muslim woman who was ordered by sheriff’s deputies to remove her hijab in a courthouse holding cell.

If we’ve missed any news this week about Muslim women, feel free to post links in the comments!

That 14-year-old girl was raped in Mecca. She was there for Umra.
Even though for years I have been hearing awful stories of women being harassed and groped while they are doing tawaf, I find this really horrifying.

I am now wondering how many more rapes of female pilgrims have taken place in the past, but have just never made it into the news, so we haven’t heard of them.

There’s something really rotten in the state of… oh, never mind. What can one say when the prevailing mentality among the conservative Muslims I know is that if a woman is harassed or raped, she somehow “asked for it”, and that hijab supposedly provides magical protection against all such abuse? I wonder if men will ever be taught to take responsibility for their own impulses to control, dominate and humiliate women? (Maybe when hell freezes over?)

  2. De says:

As far as “14-year old raped” story, there’s nothing in the article to me that indicates she committed suicide…I could be wrong, but from the article alone, I don’t see it. Thanks..

  3. Yusuf Smith says:

No, it just says she fell. She could easily have been murdered, probably by the rapist.

  4. Fatemeh says:

The original article has now been updated to show that someone has been charged in connection with both the rape and the fall, so I’ve changed it here. Thanks for your comments, everyone!
