#WhySheStayed and the American Muslim Community

This post was written by Laila Alawa (@lulainlife).A few weeks ago, the online world blew up in response to the allegations – and later, leaked video – of an American football player, Ray Rice, beating his then-fiancée into unconsciousness. Within the online Muslim American community, the topic was hotly discussed and debated. Nuances were examined, resources shared, and experiences spoken of, all with the intention of unpacking the complexities of the Rice incident. With the variety of organ … [Read more...]

In April 2011, Faleh Hassan Almaleki, an Iraqi immigrant to the United States, was sentenced to 34.5 years in prison for killing his 20 year-old daughter for becoming "too westernized." “Outlawed in Pakistan”: A Powerful Look at Violence Against Women

I watched The Interrupters in 2012 for Muslimah Media Watch, when it aired under FRONTLINE in the United States. You can still watch that film … [Read more...]

Der Spiegel Highlights the Poor, Slutty Muslim Girls of Europe

Apparently, and without my own knowledge, I, as the generic Muslim female, have been gettin' the haraam on in public washrooms. Der Spiegel recently published a two-part piece looking at the secret sex lives of young European Muslim women.  The article surveys the "shame" that leading sexual lives can bring upon young Muslim women, from varying backgrounds, as well as the danger and general deceit: Young Muslim women are often forced to lead double lives in Europe. They have sex in public … [Read more...]

The recent release of a video showing the flogging of a girl by the Taliban in Pakistan has created a stir across the web. Various articles have been published about it, both on mainstream news sites and blogs.  The reason for the whipping remains unclear: media outlets report intercourse before marriage, rejection of a marriage proposal, and going outside without a male escort as the possible reasons for the flogging. Whatever the Taliban’s reasoning for the flogging, the video itself presents a … [Read more...]
