My toddler is touching his rectum. Is this normal?

I found your blog and hoped to have you ease my mind. My son is struggling in day care and screams historically.  I hate that he is even in daycare so this is hard for me to begin with. But now he has started steering his finger into his rectum every time I take his diaper off. Is this normal? It's so disgusting as a parent.  He tries to insert his finger every time and then he jumps and acts weird. Like a response to the sensation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It sounds like your … [Read more...]

Part of Panel on Mormon Matters re Virtue

I was recently involved on a panel discussion over at Mormon Matters regarding "virtue."  Here is the description from Dan Wotherspoon:So often in Mormon discourse, the term “virtue” is treated almost exclusively as relating to sexual purity, chastity, and virginity, completely missing its much broader and wonderfully expansive meanings. Similarly, most talk about “morality,” “passion,” “modesty,” and “sensuality” are spoken about almost solely in terms of sexuality. We receive, without caref … [Read more...]

To circumcise or not to circumcise?

My husband and I just recently had our second child, a son. We were planning on circumcising him as my husband is circumcised but as we got closer to actually going through with it my husband and I felt uneasy about it, did some research and decided that we are not going to circumcise our son. Well, my mother-in-law sent us an email expressing her concern about our decision based on the fact that our son will have to clean himself every day under his foreskin and that will make not giving into … [Read more...]

My 7 year old won’t stop playing with himself…

I have a son who is about to turn 8 who for the most part never really grew out of the phase where he found out the pleasure that can come from his genitalia.  He generally "humps" things until it makes him go pee.  This can happen a few times a week.Normal thought says this is natural, but as a faithful LDS, we've spoken to him about the sacredness of his body parts and things like that.  We read scriptures faithfully every night but for some reason he just cannot stop.I'm not sure what can … [Read more...]

Should you start worrying about your child at a certain age?

This was a question asked regarding the latest post on childhood masturbation:Is there a certain age where you would start feeling concern if they are continuing in the practice?Yes. I would start feeling concern if the child continued to find it a non-issue to masturbate in public places from first grade on (especially if calling attention to themselves and even being teased by other children does not have an impact on the cessation of the behavior). When a child is unable to pick up … [Read more...]

How do I teach my kids about sex?

I have been reading through your blog and HIGHLY enjoying it! I've already sent off 3 links to my husband to read (on sex, and on parenting as well). I think its going to be very beneficial for us.One topic that has been concerning me of late, is how to have the "sex talk" with our children. We have a soon-to-be 9yo and a 7yo and I *know* I need to address it, but am hesitant because 1) I am embarrassed and 2) I don't want to say too much, or not enough.I want my kids to be knowledgeable … [Read more...]
