As the crescent moon makes its way across the horizon, Ramadan slowly approaches. Believers of all different walks of life enter this month with a humble heart. I’m not sure what it is about Ramadan that comforts my soul in the way it does. It might be the time I’m able to spend with my family or the extra emphasis I put on practicing Islam rather than talking about it, but it definitely has a profound impact on me.

For me, Ramadan acts as a safe-space for the rest of the year. For some reason, I make more time to pray and do good. I’m not sure why, but I feel as though I can accomplish anything during this month. There is a spiritual doorway that opens during this time which allows our prayers to be answered almost instantaneously. I thank Allah (SWT) that my most precious du’as (prayers) which were savored throughout the month of Ramadan have never been turned away.

I look at these thirty days as a time for renewal. They have healed me in the most personal ways. I have come to doors of Ramadan weighed down by the burdens that are shackled to my ankles, following me. Allah gives me a chance to free myself from these burdens—complete emancipation from the darkness that follows.

When the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) mentioned that “The Gates of Paradise will be opened, the gates of Hell-fire will be closed, and the devils will be chained,’ I believe he was trying to emphasize the fact that Ramadan is a time where the universe returns to its true form. The Believers live for nothing but to please Allah during this time. Divine Mercy can be felt in the air and Allah grants me peace of mind.  I believe in the Power of the inherit goodness that is instilled in us all.

I look at these thirty days as a time for renewal. They have healed me in the most personal ways.

At the time of our creation, everyone declared that Allah was their Lord. The highest saints and the lowest sinners had this interaction with Allah before we were placed on earth. The fact that we all had this powerful interaction with Allah while we were in our purest of forms shows that anyone can get back to that form.

With this in mind, I am reminded to use Ramadan to connect to that version of me which declared the majesty of Allah. I remind myself that I deserve the healing and forgiveness that Ramadan has to offer. May it be a month of healing, forgiveness, and spiritual rejuvenation for us all. Ameen.
