In Honor of International Women’s Day I’m Taking My Kids to the Doctor

As Salaamu Alaikum - Peace be upon you - and howdy all. So today is International Women's Day?  Hmm, managed to forget to put that on my calendar.  Well, I'll try to celebrate anyway.  I got off to a good start.  I made an empowering pot of coffee and indulged myself by using real half and half instead of powdered creamer.  I toasted a very feminist and independent bagel for my husband, who was taking care of his dad before heading off to work. The highlight of my day as an International Woman … [Read more...]

What Are the Limits of Friendship with Non-Muslims?

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the MercifulPeace be upon you, and the Mercy of Allah and His Blessings.Howdy all!  It is Saturday, February 13.  And you know what that means - only two days until all that Valentine's candy goes on sale!  Whoooo! But seriously, folks. Today's video blog (does anyone else really, really hate the term "vlog".  Hate it.  Hate, hate hate it.) covers the topic of non-Muslim friends.  Are we even allowed to have non-Muslim friends?  Well, the short ans … [Read more...]

Catching up on things before the Super Bowl

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the MercifulPeace be upon you, and the Mercy of Allah and His Blessings Good morning everyone!  It is a cold but decent Saturday morning here in the 'Burg.  The sun shines intermittently between the clouds, the dirty frosty remains of Snowzilla are gone from all but the shadiest corners of the neighborhood, the boys are off to Saturday Islamic school, and I sit here with my half-consumed cup of coffee.  The two smaller kids are home with me.  One is doi … [Read more...]

Securing the Faithful – A Session I Attended in Spotsylvania County to Learn How to Make our Houses of Worship Safer

As Salaamu Alaikum – Peace be upon you – and hello to all my fellow human beings. Last night my husband and I attended a training session called “Securing the Faithful”. This session was sponsored by the Spotsylvania County Virginia Sheriff's Department and Germanna Community College in Fredericksburg Virginia. This course was immensely informative, and before I get into the details, I would like to thank First Sergeant Shaun D. Jones, Senior Deputy William E. Lee, and Germanna Chief of Police … [Read more...]

What Lessons Can Muslims Take from the Ahmed Mohamed Story?

Yesterday a teenager was arrested for bringing a clock to school. If you just this minute discovered social media, here is a link to the story. Take your time; I'll wait: "They Thought it was a Bomb; 9th Grader Arrested After Bringing Homemade Clock to School" And no, that headline did not come from The Onion. Today was a different story. Today young Ahmed Mohamed broke the internet and garnered support from Muslim organizations, The Jet Propulsion Lab, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, and our … [Read more...]

When the Brown & Black Ones Get to High School

I have five kids at home. They range in age from fifteen to five. I just sent the youngest off to kindergarten this year. My teenage son takes after me, his pasty mom of European extraction. Medium-brown hair, eyes that shade from gray to green depending on the weather and his mood, totally not-Arab skin tone that is everything a WASP could dream for. He tans nicely. He is a proud nerd / geek. He works on computers and is part of an anti-hacking cyber team. He is learning how to fly a plane. … [Read more...]

The Palin / Trump Interview: Fluff Piece Extraordinaire

So last night I took on the awesome responsibility of watching and live-tweeting former Governor Sarah Palin's interview of presidential candidate Donald Trump. You're welcome. I put the kids to bed, brewed up a nice cup of decaf, told my husband to go do Netflix for an hour, and settled down with my iPhone and computer. I limbered up my fingers by scritching the cats under their chins for a few minutes, thought long and hard about an appropriate hashtag, and then started … [Read more...]

A Couple of Periscope Broadcasts (Videos)

As Salaamu Alaikum and hello all.  I hope you are having / have had a blessed Jumuah.  I am posting here a couple of videos I'd like you to take a look at.  One I did yesterday afternoon.  It was a short Q&A about Islam.  A young lady from Turkey asked some pointed questions about Islam and her attitude is that she wants Islam to be eliminated from Turkey.  She said that she herself is Muslim so of course you can see that she is confused.  I engaged her in the first video, then I did another … [Read more...]

Ah, it’s a hard world, isn’t it?

As Salaamu Alaikum and hello all.  It is Thursday morning.  Yesterday was a tough day for anyone living in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  I mean, it's weird, how we make seemingly distant events familiar.  I'm all the way on the other side of the state from where this heinous shooting took place, but because it happened in my state, and one of the victims went to Virginia Tech and I have a friend who is an alumnus, well, it felt like it was happening right on my doorstep. Two people murdered in … [Read more...]

A Few Words on the Confederate Flag and Its Effect on People

This will be quick because I just am wrapping up at work and I need to go home and do laundry before the kids are reduced to wearing fig leaves.  Which I don't have.  I do have some celery sticks in the fridge but can't see how that would work.... Okay, the issue of the Confederate flag, or more specifically the Battle Flag of Virginia, has been huge in the news since that young man entered a church in Charleston and assassinated eight people.  There are those who should say it should go be … [Read more...]
