Why does the menstruating woman not pray or fast? A personal and practical possible answer

As Salaamu Alaikum. I have had some Muslim friends asking questions about certain rules and regulations in Islam. Specifically, it was asked "Why don't we women pray or fast during our menses?".Now, the short answer to that is "God said so". It is agreed upon by all the scholars that the teachings in the Qur'an and in the Sunnah (the way of Prophet Muhammad, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) indicate that women are not to pray or to fast when they are on their menstrual cycle. We … [Read more...]

A Muslim on Memorial Day

As with many other non-Muslim holidays, many Muslims look upon Memorial Day with mixed feelings. Of course, it's not just us; a lot of Americans have mixed feelings, wanting to honor those who have died in service to the country, but conflicted because so many of those deaths were unnecessary because the wars or conflicts were misguided and mis-fought. When American soldiers, sailors, or Marines have gone to countries where Muslims are the majority and have shot them, bombed them, … [Read more...]

The Duck War on Dynasty Christmas With a Side of Dead Famous People

Howdy!  Yeah, it's been a while since I've posted.  Quite a while.  Shame on me.  Shame on my brain, more like.  In times of stress it shuts down all non-essential services and leaves me with the ability to make pancakes, tie shoes, write in short paragraphs, and ignore the fact that I forgot to put money in the kids' school lunch accounts.  Damn brain. I'm still emerging from the brain fog, but man, there has been SO much going on.  People dying, famous and infamous people making shocking prono … [Read more...]

The Transgender Muslim

Transgender Muslims?  This has been a thing on my Facebook feed recently.  I even received a private message asking me about it.  Well, I'm not a scholar and I'm not a doctor and I'm not a psychologist, so you are going to get my complete off-the-cuff uneducated layperson's point of view:DNA.  It makes us what we are.  I went to school with a girl who had very masculine attributes.  Turns out she had a genetic mutation that gave her some extra male genes or something.  She was always the husk … [Read more...]

Why I am Opposed to a Million Muslim March on the Anniversary of 9/11

This might tick some people off but let me put it out there:  I am emphatically NOT in favor of a "Million Muslim March" on the anniversary of 9/11.  There, I said it. The founders of the march say that they want to reclaim 9/11, but I say simply, you cannot.  You cannot "reclaim" 9/11.  It is seared into the consciousness of every American and many people around the world.  It is a day when the world stopped.  I remember that I was in the kitchen baking bread when I heard the first news of a "s … [Read more...]

Ramadan Thoughts So Far; Kinda the Same as Non-Ramadan Thoughts, Plus Trayvon

Today is Sunday, the fourteenth of July.  I've been fasting since Tuesday.  I'm starting to get into the swing of things, though getting up at o-dark-thirty to eat when I'm barely conscious is something I'll never be good at.  To the point; my breakfast this morning was two slices of leftover cold pizza and an ice cream sandwich.  Took my vitamins, glugged my water, prayed, went back to bed. I'm trying to pace myself.  I have been reading Qur'an and working on my memorization more, but other tha … [Read more...]

One Pair of Shoes

They get me where I'm going, even if they don't do it in style.

I am an anti-fashionista.  I know nothing about style and I care nothing about style.  I shop at thrift stores.  I shop sales.  I buy for my kids first and myself last.  I buy cute dresses to wear around the house so I won't look like a schlub in front of hubby, but I don't obsess over shoes or drool over purses.  Do I have to turn in my woman card? Recently I was thinking about my shoes.  Those shoes, the ones in the picture.  I bought them from the thrift store sometime maybe last fall.  They … [Read more...]

I’m Going to Hell Now, Been Nice Knowin’ Ya

ivoted

Election day.  The airwaves are full of pundits and politicians making one last desperate push to send their guy across the finish line first.  Every four years we go through this with but a brief respite between campaigns.  Along with the talking heads of the mainstream media, the Muslim Ummah weighs in on the candidates, for, against, and abstaining. Every time there's an election you can be sure the battle lines will be drawn. Not Republican vs Democrat, or Libertarian vs Green.  The arg … [Read more...]

Muslim First, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent After

vote

Of course, the most common water-cooler conversation today is last night's presidential debate.  Common consensus is that Governor Romney brought the battle to President Obama, while the president kind of stunk it up.  The more I watched the debate, the more my own position crystallized.  I'm not voting for either of them.  I'm done. There are those who would criticize me for "abdicating my responsibility" but in an untenable situation, sometimes no action is possible.  If you are standing in fr … [Read more...]

Subway Ads? Yeah, I love their sandwiches! Oh, wait….

Sometimes, when it’s been awhile since I've written  a blog post, my editor will gently poke me to remind me that, hey, I’m a writer!  She’ll inbox me with an innocuous question.  “Did you see that article about such-and-such?”  I, being quick on the uptake, take the subtle hint and check out all the news to see what’s topical and interesting.  Of course, even before she contacted me I knew what was the most interesting, fascinating news that affected me and almost everyone I know.... I am SO gl … [Read more...]
