Woman caught with heroin in Laos

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahI've been kind of following a news story on CNN about a woman who was allegedly caught with about two kilos of heroin on her in Laos. She is in jail there now, and possibly became pregnant as a result of rape while in jail. She is awaiting trial right now.I have mixed emotions about this. First of all, rape is a horrendous crime and no woman should ever have to submit to it. Being in a filthy hellhole of a prison with inadequate food and … [Read more...]

All Priests Should Practice “Edibacy”

The latest "scandal" to hit the Roman Catholic Church is the tale of a priest, Father Alberto Cutie, who apparently had a two-year affair with a woman. This, of course, violated his vows of celibacy. Now, I'm a Muslim, so the whole "you can't serve God unless you give up sex" thing is a nonstarter for me. But I thought I'd offer a tongue-in-cheek commentary on it all. Since worldly pursuits such as eating, drinking, and having sex all distract one from pastoral duties, I think that, in addition … [Read more...]

Don’t Call Non Muslim Women “Meat”

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahI was reading some postings about hijab. Now, usually I find the topic uplifting, because my sisters post verses from the Holy Qur'an and hadiths about the ruling on women covering. It is inspiring to see women who rush to obey Allah and cover themselves. May Allah help us to obey Allah in all areas of our lives, such as praying, fasting, being good wives to our husbands, strong mothers for our children, and obeying our parents. The tone … [Read more...]

What Makes a Muslim a Muslim

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimThese are some more thoughts from the Saturday sisters' halaqah at Ummah of Noor in Second Life:In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the MercifulAll thanks is to Allah, whom we seek His help and forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from whatever evil our hearts conceal and from the consequences of our evil deeds. Whoever Allah grants guidance will never be led astray. Whoever He leads astray will never find guidance. I attest that none is worthy of worship except Allah, … [Read more...]

My White Cheese Recipe – Gibnah Baydah

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahHome made cheese, yum! In a large pot, bring 1/2 gallon of whole milk just to a boil. Right as it is beginning to boil, add 1/2 cup of whole milk natural yogurt. Stir with a whisk, then add the juice of one lemon. Turn off heat and allow to curdle for one minute, stirring. Drain through cheesecloth for about twenty minutes, reserving the whey (liquid) for use in soups. Break apart the cheese into a bowl and salt as you like. You can … [Read more...]

My Fuul Recipe

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahI make my fuul from scratch, though I do try to keep a can or two around for emergencies!I buy a big two-pound bag of dried fuul (small brown fava beans) and make a huge batch all at once. Rinse the beans, then soak at least overnight in plenty of water. Drain and rinse, then put in a pot with water to cover. Cook until tender, adding a bit of additional water as necessary. At this stage, before adding any seasoning, I portion out the fuul … [Read more...]

My Pita Bread Recipe – Eish Baladi

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahI make my own pita bread, as I find store-bought to be tough and dry by comparison. I serve this with fuul or use the dough to make zaatar. For this recipe, I use a Kitchenaid stand mixer with mixing hook and dough hook, measuring cups and spoons, a dough cutter, a rolling pin, and cookie sheets. In the bowl of my mixer, I place one cup of all-purpose flour, one tablespoon sugar, one teaspoon salt, two tablespoons yeast, and two tablespoons … [Read more...]

All these mass murders / murder-suicides

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahThe new stories are coming hard and fast now. Every day, every single day, there is a story about a mass killing. Many of the stories have similar details; Dad is in debt, loses his job or can't sell a house, so he kills his wife and children and then kills himself. The latest story on CNN was about a guy who was in debt to the tune of almost half a million dollars. He made almost a hundred thousand a year, yet he couldn't manage to … [Read more...]
