Last Things First

My mind is almost in vapor lock. Too many things to do, not enough time, money tight as always. Sherif is in Egypt at the moment, preparing to bring his father back to stay with us. It must be pretty stressful over there; he hasn't even called me yet to tell me he's there, but since there are no news reports of planes diappearing into a Bermuda Pyramid, I have to assume he made it okay. There is still a lot of junk - er, I mean, eBay stuff - in the basement. I have to finish taking it all to … [Read more...]

Hubby brought me a bouquet of – wooden spoons!

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahA wise man buys a gift for his wife because it is something she wants to have, not because it is something he wants to give her.Men give gifts all the time. They give women flowers, jewelry, candy, lingerie. Of course, with the lingerie, there is a lot of self-interest at work. If I were going to buy something to sleep in for myself, it would be something ugly, flannel, and comfortable. Most men buy these things because it is traditional; … [Read more...]

Trying to eat right, hubby trying to sabotage

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim Salaam Alaikum wa Rahmatullah So I'm trying to eat less, to manage my intake and not eat a bunch of between meal meals. I've been twittering every single thing I eat. I don't put down portions or calories because that's just too organized for me, but I've been faithful in writing down everything. This evening, I made banana smoothies for everyone when Abdel Hamid and I returned from his Tae Kwon Do. Milk, frozen bananas, protein powder. Easy but substantial, all you … [Read more...]

Making my son clean up after dinner

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa Rahmatullah. It's past nine, the kids should be in bed, but I let them stay up late so they could be up when Daddy got home. He doesn't usually work this late so I held dinner too late, I think . Ah, well, everyone is fed and Abdel Hamid is cleaning the table. The dining room is his responsibility, from table to floor. He has to clean the table, clear it, put away food, and sweep or vaccum as necessary. Every kid should have responsibilities.Don't … [Read more...]

My So-Called Second Life

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahI joined Second Life a few months ago, and I have to say I am addicted. I created an avatar named Noorah Haalan. She is Muslim also and wears the abaya and hijab. You can go to SL and be the same as you are in real life, only moreso, or you can go to SL to create a completely different persona who doesn't necessarily share your values or lifestyle. SL is much like real life in that there are many, many places to go to see things that would … [Read more...]

Haven’t posted in a while

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa Rahmatullah / HiIt's been a while since I've posted. It's not like I haven't been writing... I post to my FaceBook page, I Tweet on Twitter, and I chat a lot on Second Life. But I've been a bit in a daze lately. Sometimes my brain goes on vapor lock and I can't put my thoughts together in a coherent fashion. In such instances, the brief twitter entry is about as much as I can manage.Taking care of the kids, cooking, cleaning - or avoiding cleaning. … [Read more...]

An Autism / Asperger’s Success Story

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahMy son is taking Tae Kwan Do. He's been learning for over three years now. I have taken him to class usually three times a week for the entire three years. It's been a big commitment of time, money, and his effort, but it has been worth it. My sweet nine-year-old son will, inshAllah, test for his black belt in the spring. Not bad for a kid who can't remember to clear the dinner dishes after every meal! But this is not about him, it's … [Read more...]

Where is it safe to raise our kids?

Someone commented on my "40 questions" note, on Facebook about not wanting her kids to grow up in the US. Someone else asked why and she said she had seen other peoples' kids turn out bad.Is it the US? Well, some might think so. I think it's not that simple. My husband is from Egypt. Now, Egypt is ostensibly a "Muslim" country. But trust me, it has many if not most of the ills that you find here in the US. The corruption is actually worse in many ways. Bribery, "baksheesh" , is a daily affair. … [Read more...]

Of Beyonce and Amy Winehouse, et al

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahWell, I posted a little note on my Facebook page yesterday. I got a small but vehement response to it. I'm still trying to figure it out.I have lots of people on my friends list. Young, not so young, mature like me. I see what they are posting, check out their profiles to make sure that a) they are women (some names are like "Free Palestine" so it's hard to tell) and b) they are not crazy freaky insane stalker-type people who will hunt me … [Read more...]

Tuesday – Obama And All That

Bismillahi Rahmani RahimSalaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahIt's Tuesday morning. I'm fortifying myself with a cup of decaf, getting ready for the day. Hubby is almost out the door, finishing his bagel breakfast sandwiches and waiting for the car to warm up. The two smaller boys are awake. My oldest is still asleep because I let him stay up late to watch "24". The baby, thankfully, is napping in her bassinette, hopefully for more than five minutes.I have the TV on to MSNBC at the moment. I don't … [Read more...]
