Ramadan Moonsighting; A Lesson in “Divide and Conquer”

Every year it's the same thing.  An epic battle rages on the internet between two different factions of Muslims.  I'm not talking Sunni vs Shia here - I'm talking about The Moonsighting Wars. Okay, here's the thing.  The Muslim religious calendar follows the lunar cycle.  We keep track of the moon and count the new month when the first sliver of a new moon is sighted every month.  I have a little calendar thingy on my iPhone.  It tells me that today is the sixteenth of the month of Sha'abaan.  T … [Read more...]

Subway Ads? Yeah, I love their sandwiches! Oh, wait….

Sometimes, when it’s been awhile since I've written  a blog post, my editor will gently poke me to remind me that, hey, I’m a writer!  She’ll inbox me with an innocuous question.  “Did you see that article about such-and-such?”  I, being quick on the uptake, take the subtle hint and check out all the news to see what’s topical and interesting.  Of course, even before she contacted me I knew what was the most interesting, fascinating news that affected me and almost everyone I know.... My Brother the Drug Dealer

Every family has one. That relative who makes you cringe. The black sheep of the family. The trouble maker. The bad seed. The bum. A nut-brown girl in a village in India, a flaming redhead in Ireland, an … [Read more...]

Just Another Honor Killing in the News

Today a Canadian court delivered a guilty verdict in the prosecution of Mohammed Shafia for the “honor murders” of his three teenage daughters and first wife. Once again Islam is in the spotlight as the acts of three ignorant people cast a horrible light on the religion they profess, Islam. Okay, just so we're clear here. There is NO place in Islam for so-called “honor killings”. Honor killings are murder, plain and simple, and anyone who tries to claim that they are condoned by Muslims or by … [Read more...]

The death of (another) tyrant

bismillah2

Salaam Alaikum wa RahmatullahYesterday the tyrant Qadhafi was killed, and as the news spread, response to his death lit up the blogosphere and social networks. On my own Facebook page, my wall was flooded with comments ranging from "Whoopie!" to "He's a martyr!".  I kept my own response short and simple, commenting that instead of obsessing about his death, we should concentrate on the state of our own souls, because on the Day of Judgment each of us will be worried about ourselves to the … [Read more...]
